Say I want to share my videos folder on my external HDD with someone else who also has a Mac. How would I do it? I did some reading/researching but I am still not 100% sure how. Do I just make that videos folder a shared folder and somehow give the other person "permission" to access it? Note we are not on the same network as we are located in different locations.

In general terms there are two methods:

1. Connect both to a cloud provider that allows sharing - google, one drive, etc. So the shared folder is in the cloud.

2. Use an app which allows you to create a virtual LAN. I use Tailscale. Not as easy to get started, but once configured correctly the other person can connect to a shared folder on your Mac. Requires additional software on both Macs and something more than beginner level network knowledge. They will need a username on your Mac.

I was told I could also use an FTP solution.
Let's say three methods. If you do use FTP, make sure you are using SFTP, have opened the required ports on your router, and have considered security implications. And, of course, that the other person has installed an SFTP client - e.g. the Filezilla Client.

Edit: Method 4:
For videos, use a media streaming service running on your Mac. I use Plex https://www.plex.tv/. The other person needs Plex client and both need free Plex accounts.
