how to sleep macbook after screensaver?

For some reason, whenever my macbook pro is idle and goes into the screensaver, it will not sleep. I like to unplug my macbook for the night, and the next morning, I find the battery completely drained. What the macbook tends to do is after a period with the screensaver, it shuts off the display, but for some reason the computer itself doesn't sleep. Anyone else have this issue?

I know this is the obvious answer, but have you checked your Energy Saver Preferences in System Preferences?

When you unplug it for the night, just shut the lid.

Also, it's not necessary to unplug the computer at night. It's fine to let it sleep while plugged in.
