I wonder why crucial doesn't offer a 32gb package on their site. They only offer 16. You can buy 2 sets of the 16gb, but aren't they specially matched or something when you get them all from the same package?

You have 4 slots in the imac. As long as each ram piece inside has the same brand and size it's fine. So 4x4 gb, 2x8gb or 4x8gb. Probably crucial doesn't sell 32gb packs because its pointless since you can buy two packs of 16gb and 32 is yet not a mainstream amount.

Or you can just buy one 8 GB and the 16 GB kit? I don't really see the problem to be honest.

I suspect that they don't have RAM for the new iMacs listed yet.

There are "matched pairs" but no "matched 4-packs". So typically you just buy RAM in pairs.

What particular areas does a better video card help? I'm not a gamer. I surf the web, use Aperture, and video editing.

Thx,

If you do any special effects/rendering in your video editing, the better GPU will help there.

When will BTO options be on the Apple website? Anyone have any idea?

Just curious what does bro stand for. I know it is probably the low end initial iMac. But just curious.

Also any update to my question on the regular drive or. Fusion drive.

Seems like there is some confusion about this - but is it VESA mountable?

BTO is "Build to order", i.e. you're customizing your Mac through Apple's website rather than buying one off the shelf.

Here's questions you can ask yourself in order to decide whether you want regular HDD, a Fusion drive, or an SSD, and what size to get:
1) How much stuff do you have? How much stuff do you want to have?
2) Do you plan to set up a Bootcamp partition to run Windows natively?
3) Do you want your applications and operating system to load very quickly?
4) How much are you willing to pay in order to get that speed increase?
5) Are you willing to gamble on "1.0" software?
6) To what degree does using an external drive appealing (or not)?

Thanks. And sorry for the typo. I did see another thread on fusion vs regular drive. I am going to check it out now

I have just placed my RAM order with Crucial.

16GB kit (8GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM
Upgrade for a Apple iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) System
Only $79.99.

Now all I need is a computer to put it in...ha.

These prices are just too good, I couldn't help but buy another lot of 16GB RAM (now total 32GB), before they sellout..
And I don't think I'll be spending my money on a computer for another month or so...

Talk about fast delivery to Australia!
Crucial offer a very professional service indeed.

So I'm all rammed up and no where to go....

So current plan for me seems to be:

27" base + 3TB Fusion
32GB aftermarket RAM.

If I don't game at all, is there any reason at all to worry about the graphics card?

Video edting, particularly rendering.

Otherwise no. The 660M will have more than enough power for the UI and YouTube.

When you say as long as each piece is the same brand, does that mean it's bad to order an 8GB model, and throw 2x4GB sticks of memory in it that I buy from Macsales?

Also is Crucial better than memory bought at macsales?

I'm curious about this as well. I was planning on leaving the 2x4GB that comes with the machine, and adding 2x8GB from Crucial for a total of 24GB. Will that work?

Sorry same brand I personally wouldn't mix up. But as long as the ram has same speed and size and type it should be fine in theory. But the 8 from apple fill all slots I think as 2gb rams. so if you will replace it with 16 you should buy 4 new 4gb rams and toss out apples instead of getting 2x 8 gb and have that in combo with two tiny gb from apple. At least that's what I would do. I've had too much trouble before mixing ram sizes. And it should always be even numbers 2 slots and 2 slots.

I don't know about the ram you are referring to. I'm from Norway, dunno if we have it here. I bought crucial last time, has worked perfectly fine, so gonna buy that again. Crucials value ram is cheap and good and reliable.

On the iMac page it says they come with 8GB (two 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 memory.

Oh ok I guess I was wrong. Yeah u should be able to mix that and get 24. Experience any problem just toss out the 8 apple ram and replace it with another 16 ;)

What about for Aperture/Lightroom? Do those benefit much from video card. I don't do a lot of photo manipulation but my wife does. Or is 2D just not affected that much by the video card?

My understanding is that 2D work is more CPU limited.
