Just pick a number in your head and write it down. You don’t need a calculator. If the waiter is awful, then it’s a pretty easy answer.
OR- you could just multiply the total times 0.2, round to the nearest dollar....
Unsurprisingly, there are a LOT of people that can't do that.
Yesterday I had to weep for humanity when someone at work used Copilot to add 3 to something. And it got it wrong.Unsurprisingly, there are a LOT of people that can't do that.

They do but only those with a low AIQ need to take it 😊They don’t teach math anymore?😛
It's already been proven that wild animals use more areas of their brains than humans do. We've turned into a nation of overfed clowns riding in clown cars, eating clown food, watching clown shows. We've become a nation of cringing, craven f***-ups.When I found out about this a while back, I started using it almost every time I needed to calculate the tip/split amount. Very useful.
Although it's another thing that let's me use my brain less. I wonder how things will go if gen AI really does take off with widely used consumer use cases.
That's insane. Complete wackiness!Never knew this.
Then again I live in a country where we don't tip. And they take separate payments from each person based on what they ordered.
Circles. Then everyone is equally unhappy.Next an app to tell you which way to wipe!
I mean, that would be up to you depending on whether you input the subtotal or the grand total on the bill 🤷♂️Using this over-simplified method, you are tipping on the State Tax and any "Service fee," not just the actual food bill.
The Plates app allows you to accomplish exactly that. (Just not using OCR.)What would really be handy would be a phone app with OCR which can read the restaurant receipt, isolate each individual item, and assign it to a person. That way if everyone at the table got a $15 burger except for Chad, who got the $30 steak we can make sure Chad pays is fair share. (I'm sure this exists I'm just too lazy to search the app store).
Every receipt I've received has the total before tax and fees listed also. You can enter the pre-tax total to calculate the tip instead of the grand total..Using this over-simplified method, you are tipping on the State Tax and any "Service fee," not just the actual food bill.
