How to SSH with a BLANK username?

My friend is trying to SSH to a Cisco router from the terminal, but it keeps trying to log him in as his username, but the router doesn't have a username. He needs to SSH to it without a username, but there seems to be no way to do this from the terminal. He tried the -l option, and just didn't type a username, and that didn't work. Any other thoughts?
