I have been searching for a way to stop embedded videos on websites from automatically playing. It is annoying when I am commuting in a quiet train or reading an article to have a video either related to the article or in an ad on the webpage start up without notice.

In desktop browsers there is a way to stop this from occurring, but I can't find a setting in iOS to control this behavior. Am I missing something or is it not there?

Are you talking about facebook?

Go to settings, scrolling down to facebook, select settings and deselect autoplay

No, I am aware that Facebook has a setting for its App. I am trying to stop embedded videos on regular websites like ESPN etc.

Odd, ESPN doesn't do that for me on my iPhone. Are you using their mobile site or the full site?
