How to stop email filtering

My iPhone sometimes turns on the email filter so that I see only new emails. (I have to turn it back off.) I want to see both read and unread (which acts as a kind of to do list). Why does the filter decide to turn itself on from time to time? How do I stop it?

I guess you are talking about the icon in lower left corner? Newer experienced it to turn on by it self. Are you sure you are not touching it by accident?

I don't see how that is possible. I only go to the settings to turn off the filter.

I am confused. The lower left icon is an Filter on/off toggle. Why not leave it off?
