My iMac is located in a small office in my home. The stereo is in an adjoining living room. The stereo receiver has standard RCA inputs. I want to stream my iTunes library to the stereo. This stereo is separate from the television. I understand how to stream iTunes using my Apple TV. But I want to go direct to the stereo which is across the room from the television and not connected to it in any way.

I spent time just now on the Apple Store and the only thing I could find that seems to do the job is the Airport Express. Is this the right device for this purpose? How would one configure it if so where it would only be connected to the stereo? Can that be done wirelessly from my iMac?

I seem to recall Apple used to sell a simpler dedicated device for this but maybe the Aiport Express even though it is a router as well replaces it? Am I missing something here?

Thanks for any advice on how to get my music from my iMac to my stereo and sorry if I posted this in the wrong place. I wasn't sure where to ask this question.

By the way, I also have an Airport Extreme that's fairly recent (purchased in 2012) which is just the router, no backup capability. I'm not sure if that plays any role in doing this or not. Currently that just provides wifi connectivity for my Kindle and my kids MacBooks when they visit me. Thanks again.

I used an AirPort Express with a 3.5mm to RCA cable into the AUX port of my receiver as well as AirFoil from rogueamoeba.com.
My iMac was wired to my router, which had wifi turned off. This was before AirPlay. Worked great, then she moved in. Now even the Z-Cinema speakers are disconnected. The speakers were a great deal, just a little more than the Express.

Airport Express is what you need. As you have an AirPort Extreme already, the set up is simple & you'll have the added benefit of extending your wireless network too. I have this set-up & it works a treat:)

    Hope this helps.

I picked up a lightly used 4g iPod and simply plugged it into my receiver with a 3.5mm to RCA adapter. Streams my music and podcasts via home sharing in different rooms around the house (three stereos or headphones). Cheap, easy, and effective for me.

Thanks. I checked in with my sister-in-law in the meantime and she uses this solution as well. So Airport Express it shall be coming up. In the meantime, I did have an appropriate adapter to plug my iPhone into the receiver so I can listen to iTunes radio and some favorite albums until I have access to my complete music collection.

Thanks all for the replies. :)
