How To Tell If External Hard Drive Is Working?

Hi,

I'm trying to transfer my documents, applications & photos from my macbook air to my new macbook pro 2016 notebook and the external hard drive I have does not go beyond "preparing backup".

Does this mean the hardrive is failing and/or it's some other issue?

I would appreciate any feedback/advice on how to resolve this issue as I would like to back up my data. Thanks!

If it is the first Time Machine backup, depending on the size of the files being backed up and speed of hard drive, it could take a few moments to several +. It is best to be patient.
