how to tell if iPhone is locked to carrier

Is there any way to tell if an iPhone is locked to a carrier without opening it? I have a new phone I'm trying to figure this out about, but i dont want to unseal the phone as it would lower the resale value.

Nothing you can tell. Apple should tell you if you chat/call in with the S/N or IMEI though.
