Now THIS is the type of on-point info that I was looking for! Thanks! How much time was between the initial release of the 3GS and the silent revision coming out as the MC version?

The revision quoted above is software not hardware. Hardware changes would require FCC approval and to my knowledge have not been done by apple since the launch of the original iPhone. The only revisions that I am aware of have all been software updates such as firmware, bootrom and baseband. Do not expect any hardware changes until next year.

I take that back the 3G had a recall of it power adapter and new phones came with post recall adapters. But no changes to the phone itself.

What is frustrating about these forums is the amount of misinformation that spreads by people who have no idea what they are talking about or comment on threads they didn't fully read. Original post says hardware not software.

The only possibility I can think of is that if phones were rushed and are missing a coating that they were suppose to have but don't, then later phones will then indeed have a physical change to there hardware.

Ah, but that's exactly what I was referring to. (I guess I was using the wrong terminology?) The reason why I want to know when the next silent "manufacturing revision" is coming out is because Apple is certainly gonna try to ameliorate the i4's hardware issues as much as they can as quickly as they can. I'm sure they'll be able to tweak the manufacturing process to at least improve the antenna situation, and I'm sure they're looking to do it as soon as possible.

Manufacturing revisions happen all the time to replace parts they can't get or to decrease the failure rates after manufacturing. The manufacturing rev numbers are built into the serial numbers and all manufacturers keeps that information secret (i.e. you have no idea what the serial number indicates so have no idea when revs occur). The manufacturing revs. might fix a problem with defective phones but they will usually not correct a design problem. Contrary to what many people are saying on MacRumors, a software change (not the change that fixes the signal strength reading) has the best shot of fixing the issue if it's a design issue. Otherwise, a manufacturing rev. will most likely fix the problem if it's defective hardware.

Nope. Other than a capacity bump with the first gen, there haven't been any "silent" hardware updates to any of the other iPhone models.

No reason to believe iPhone 4 will be any different.

Wrong.

The iPhone 3GS was slightly changed to make jailbreaking more difficult.

Apples held a hard line, despite negative press. Therefore I don't see them making even the slightest improvement. If word got out, that would fuel the fires further. Besides, they've already refocused on the CDMA version for Verizon. That's a huge revenue stream for Apple. Jobs is on a roll & money grab. He's not about to let this botched launch slow him down.
