How to tie keyboard volume controls to external soundcards?

The keyboard volume controls don't work when an external soundcard is connected. Is there a way to get it to work?

OK, thanks. so the hardware controller I'll most probably end up getting will be among other things a very expensive volume knob!

if $100 for a piece of quality hardware (NHT PVC) is expensive, then yes.

otoh, you can say, "oh! i can get hardware to process my signal in a non-distoring way for only $100? what a bargain!", and i'd nod in agreement. 🙂
