call Apple

if you call Apple help and explain that your old machine crashed and you now have a new mac they will "reformat" your old purchases on itunes to allow you to download them onto the new machine. I was in a similar situation and they were extremely helpful...

Use iPod Copy or iPod Backup Software is really good software for transferring data.
One of the easiest ways to transfer iTunes library is by use software to copy the contents of your iPod to a computer.

got it

Right - im moving from a vista PC to a mac book pro and did this:

1) Find your itunes folder on you PC.
2) Copy it to your new mac in the Itunes folder in the music folder.
3) Open itunes and go to file, add folder and add everything, including apps etc.
4) Go to the Store (at the top menu) and authorise computer.
5) Then file and transfer purchases from iphone.
6) Click on the iphone icon on the left, go through what you want to sync and you can choose to merge rather than replace.

Then your set - Also if your copying over your vista mail to mac mail then you will have to do it through thunderbird, import them in and export them out before importing to mac mail. But if you do the above it will copy any contacts on your iphone as well.

Way Easier Way!!!

OK, so I figured it out after putting two and two together.

Step 1: Install Itunes (if not done already)
Step 2: Authorize Computer
Step 3: Plug in Ipod/Iphone (DO NOT RESTORE OR SYNC)
Step 4: right click on Ipod/Iphone icon on left and select "Transfer Purchases"
and Viola! I phone syncs to that computer (as opposed to computer syncing to iphone and wiping all apps)

...If cydia apps need to be backed up, download/install aptbackup (on cydia) and click "backup", then sync your phone with itunes. to restore these, just redownload aptbackup on empty iphone and click restore...

awesome... thanks for that tip. I think I just used it to successfully complete the transition of my iPhone and iPad to my preferred library. FYI, I also used a tip I found here, but I'm not sure if that was necessary or not.

contact and calendar transfer pc to pc

Hello,

The pc where my iphone contacts and calendar is synced is dying.
I want to connect my iphone to second pc and transfer the contents of my phone there.
iTunes is not yet installed on the second pc. (Both pcs are Vista).

Thank you for your help.

Um, hellp

Somehow all of my music was deleted from my iTunes library. I took my computer to the shop and I got data restored to a external hard drive. The trouble is that there are multiple copies of the same songs, albums, and pictures. They are in no order what so ever, and I don't know what to do. I have picked at the files a little bit, but I don't want to mess things up further by making more dupes. also. All of the photos that I had recovered, are opened as thumbnails of their former selves. Also, the App Preview is not my default for opening photos, all of the stuff in iPhoto appears to be there but it is not, I have tried adding the files straight from the ex. hard drive but they will still not work or be small thumbnails of the orig. picture.

I also cant import music CDs to my library because my CD drive just spits the cd out after making some noise, but my dvd player works fine. Is There ANYTHING I can do? I know my way around a computer, but the deep file stuff is still frocking my brain, If ANYONE could help, Please do. I would be most thankful, as I lost over 9,000 songs. so yeah thats the story so far.

ok, instead of me buying a shiny iphone 4s, i ended up purchasing a brand new mac book pro and stayed with my old iphone - Apple are just good at promoting their products regardless if their users actually need them or not.

anyways - to cut the story short: I have an iPod classic with most of my iTunes library (missing a few hundred tracks and a couple of playlists though - this is fixable via a sync). I have also an iphone with just the tracks i listen to daily and i manage it from a second iTunes account (on the same PC).

Now, on my windows machine i used a third party program to transfer what i needed from my iPod to my iTunes (same for my iPhone). I cannot use the same program for Mac. However, instead of transferring my iPod/iPhone to my new Mac, I would prefer to simply move my two iTunes libraries from my PC to my new Mac :apple:. I used the Shift option to create two separate iTunes libraries between which I alternate on my PC. I would like to have the same thing on my Mac with all my iTunes contents from the PC so I can sync my iPod classic independently from my iPhone there too.

If anyone could give me a hint of how to do that, I would buy him an ice-cream. :D Thanks!

osman, at this moment, i wish i could also "end up" buying a macbook pro
To backup your iTunes library, you can use a third party program such as this iTunes backup software

First, you need to ensure to keep track of which of your two libraries you backup. I have tested the program to backup the entire contents of a single iTunes library and transfer it to another PC, but transferring two separate iTunes library from PC to Mac should also work. The you can alternate between iTunes libraries on Mac (the "Shift" option) by clicking on the "Option" key as there is no Shift on a Mac keyboard.
