So I have been using the same backup on all my new iPhones for years, which included some custom ringtones and customer notification sounds. I converted them in iTunes back in the day to some special format you needed to, and transferred them over via iTunes.

I just got the 15 Pro Max and decided to set it up fresh and start over for a change, but the bummer is, I don't have my custom ringtones and notification sounds.

Is there any way to get them transferred over to the new phone without plugged it into iTunes like the old days?

Those custom ringtones are part of your backup. I have some too. Since I always restore from backup, I always have mine restored properly.

I don’t even think you can transfer those via iTunes unless you happen to have a PC running windows 10 or older, and have iTunes 12.6.5.3 installed on it. And no, you need some form of iTunes to transfer.

thanks, I was thinking the iTunes route was the only way still to do it. Why does Apple make it so hard to do this stuff.

I've had them in phone backup for 6 or 7 years, but this time, I figured since I have been using backups on new phones for so many years, I might as well start fresh with the 15 PM.

I have backups of the .MP4r files, or whatever they are. I guess I will just have to install iTunes on my iMac and redownload them to the phone. Bummer is they are on a USB-A stick, so I have to find a A-C adapter.

You don't need iTunes; Finder does it just the same. I just copied some old ringtones to my phone a few days ago.

How did you do it?

On an Android phone, you just copy files over to the Ringtones and Notifications folder. The iphone doesn't have those.

Where did you copy them to?

Just drag the files onto the phone selection on the left and they copy.

Awesome!! That worked out just fine. Thank you so much, you are a life saver!

On a side note, does it make a different if you eject the iPhone before unplugging it from a Mac? I forgot to do so and just unplugged it. I wanted to make sure I didn't corrupt anything on the phone.

Usually it doesn’t matter, but ejecting it is a bit safer, especially for data transfer.

I have followed these instructions, and my custom, created ringtone does appear on my iPhone in the Files application, but it does not appear in the pick list for either Ringtone or Text Tone. Any idea on how to have this .m4r file "recognized" by my iPhone 13 Pro as a Ringtone and Text Tone, so that I can select it and use it? Thank you.
