How to transfer photos?

Hey there, my sister is looking at getting an Air. She wants to do very light photo editing. I really mean light. Like, 10 photos a month. My question, without an SD card slot on the Air, will she just need a certain cord to connect her camera? It's an older Nikon 3300.

I have a Pro with an SD slot so I don't know how that works.

I'm completely inexperienced with this kind of thing but I'm sure I've seen SD card adaptors on the Apple accessories page.
Maybe such a thing would work?

Throw them up on iPhotos, you can just access them on the MacBook Air from there, edit them from there with whatever app you want to use. I have one of my windows network drives hooked up as well if I want to put something on there its 8tb and iCloud syncs to that as well so everything is connected.
