Easier and cheaper: Do not buy a homepod mini

With the launch of iOS 14.4, Apple added a new feature for the HomePod mini that's designed to provide haptic feedback when your iPhone 11 or 12 is near the speaker to facilitate the simpler handing off of songs from one device to another.

When moving your iPhone closer to a HomePod mini after installing the iOS 14.4 update, the iPhone vibrates quicker and quicker as it gets closer to the speaker, and HomePod mini controls pop up on the screen. If you happen to keep your HomePod mini on a desk or another location where it's often close to your iPhone, the proximity notifications can get frustrating fast.

If you've run into this problem and want the popups and vibrations to stop, follow these directions:
  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on "General."

  3. Tap on "AirPlay & Handoff."
  4. Toggle off "Transfer to HomePod."

With this feature, your iPhone will no longer attempt to transfer music or media to your HomePod mini when it's near the speaker, preventing the haptic feedback and song transfer interface from showing up. The haptic vibrations and transfer features are limited to the HomePod mini and the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 models, but the option can also be disabled on other iPhones to prevent the standard transfer interface from coming up.

I have my HomePod Mini on the bar in my kitchen and a few days ago I went to lean on the bar while looking at my iPhone and got really weirded out when it started pulsating and going blurry. Completely forgot about the update and I hadn’t tried it before. It’s a very odd sensation.

The big HomePod is a good choice, especially with two of them paired together.
I have two questions regarding the big HomePod now that you mention it. First, is it really less obtrusive? I mean the Siri part of the experience. It’s not always listening? And second, having an A8 chip, don’t you think it’s lifespan is close to end with following tvOS releases?

This might sound like a stupid/insane question, but is anyone using a HomePod (mini or otherwise) without Siri? I like the idea of a good AirPlay speaker but my wife and I just don't particularly care to have Siri on all the time.
I do. I have the original homepod. I primarily use it to stream music and podcasts. Siri on it is pretty useless (I wish it wasn't) so I rarely use it. It's fine as an AirPlay speaker but expensive. and quite buggy which is rather annoying.

Some people might want the superb sound quality that the HomePod provides, but without the shuttle wreck of a digital assistant that is Siri.

Thanks for your answer apple department!

my b&o has the same superb sound quality if not better like many others speakers in that price class.
my HomePod mini is way inferior to it.

but hey - to keep it nice - every ear hears it different - so yeah i guess apple isn’t into cheap speakers but wants to milk the smart cow!

This feature makes no sense and is so frustrating. This is Apple adding something just because they can. The old behavior was fine for handing off. Can anyone explain how this is supposed to be useful?
Agreed. Apple just added this to be a stat/feature on the spec sheet.

It's a great feature. Faster and more reliable.

I’d love to be able to turn this on and off per HomePod. I have a pair of minis on my desk that triggers too easily, but I like using the feature on Homepods elsewhere in the house.

I have this intermittently (probably 30% of the time) I haven’t noticed a pattern to when or why, I hope a future update will improve. Sorry if this is patronising but have you updated the HomePod as well as the iPhone?
I’ve updated my iPhone to 14.4 but not my Homepods. In fact, I kinda feel dumb trying to get any info about Homepod’s firmware or wi-fi settings. Whenever I try to update it I end up just turning on automatic update, so that at least I can be sure it’s updated on its own. Did you find a way to check wi-fi/firmware info on Homepods?

There doesn’t appear to be a way to see the current version info, only “check for updates”, I agree that WiFi settings is an area for improvement. Maybe try a factory reset and start again?

A great feature doesn't constantly mistake your intentions. Whats the point of the phone vibrating when I'm 3 feet away from the HomePod? Don't get me wrong, I like the ability to hand off to the HomePod but this implementation is just silly.

I haven't experienced that. For me it works great.
