How to turn off yellow highlighting of characters like ¨, ^, ´ and `

I'm getting annoyed at the yellow highlighting of some characters that can be modified by pressing a letter after it, like ^ (ô), ¨ (ë).. You get the point.

It may be trivial, but I really dislike the yellow highlighting the characters get prior to doing anything. Is there a way to turn this off?

I have a norwegian mac, but I believe this happens in all languages (?)
