As it seems Lion has made the user library a hidden folder and I routinely need to access it, is there some way I could bring it out from obscurity again (without showing all hidden files)?

    Thank you in advance.

    Search the forum :D

Hold down option key then click Go menu in Finder or enter ~/Library in "Go to Folder" from the Go menu in the finder.

or in terminal chflags nohidden /users/**username**/library

You can create an alias in the finder and the library will stay there

If I alter anything in the alias version, will it do the same in the legit folder?

When you open the alias you go to the actual folder.

This. Easiest solution in the long term, I think.

I personally used this version of the command:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library

Saves typing, and you don't need to bother about where exactly your user folder is (mine's on a different drive).
