I’ve had both T-Mobile and Sprint versions, both have been used and activated with T-Mobile and Verizon SIM’s. If you pay in full at the Apple store, they all come unlocked, just make sure you purchase as “device only” and don’t request activation.

Thanks, I know the "from apple paid off in full or iUp (my own iphone X as well as my last iphone 7+ is using t-Mobile via iUp, both are unlock) that comes unlock" but I got my GF a second one via T-Mobile to take advantage of the $300 trade-in so it will be via a 24 months payment plan. I just didn't know they won't unlock it in that situation. Anyone has any luck to get unlock when the device is still in payments?

I do not believe so. Can’t unlock it until it’s yours, which it isn’t until you complete the payments.

So after putting the tm SIM card in I don’t get this error anymore. I’ve tried my European sim in and I get a connection. I can even connect to att and t mobile. Both representatives from Apple and T-Mobile said that the phone is unlocked.

Thanks for your help
[doublepost=1511122686][/doublepost]Can anyone else confirm this ? I'm in a similar situation, having bought a T-Mobile version of the iPhone X. I have a prepaid T-Mobile account but live outside of the USA. Don't want to waste my $1000 plus dollars and end up with a phone locked to a carrier not available in my country.

I had the same issue as @olivione. Bought my X from Apple, paid in full, for the Tmobile unlocked version. I put my European sim in, turned on my X and after getting past the Select WiFi Network Page got this (see image)

I turned off the phone, put the Tmobile sim in which had come with the device, and turned the X back on. After Select WiFi Network Page it breezed past the next few pages and got straight to home screen. I then took out the Tmobile sim and put in my European one and the phone has been working absoultely fine since - even roaming in several countries round the world.

Sounds like I'll be calling Tmobile in +/- 90 days to make sure it is fully unlocked in case !

[doublepost=1511794709][/doublepost]So my question now is - Do I insert the T-Mobile sim that came from Apple with my iPhone X or do I put in the T-Mobile sim that I got when I signed up for a T-Mobile Pay as you Go account earlier this year ? That account is still active and paid up. Based on what @gdg90 wrote above I think I should put in the sim that came from Apple initially to activate the phone and having successfully done that, then put in my current T-Mobile or other sim. Any thoughts ?

To be honest I think either should work. My European sim was not Tmobile which is why I think it complained. As long as it's a Tmobile sim, I reckon it'll be fine. Try your pay as you go sim, and if that doesn't work, you can always use the new one that came with the X - which worked for both me and olivione. Hope that helps.

I have always bought iPhone's directly from Apple starting with the iPhone 5. I have never had a locked phone. You need to activate the phone once with a T-mobile Sim card. Once the phone is active you can use what ever sim card you want. If one buys iPhone from T-mobile on payment plans, they are locked to T-mobile and need 90 days of service before they will unlock it. It can only be unlocked in the US. That is why I never buy iPhones from T-mobile directly. I don't want to deal with an extra hassle. For tourists coming to the US, borrow a sim card for a minute from a US person staying at your hotel (concierge/bell boy?) for a minute and you are done. Or just buy a prepaid T-mobile sim card for use during your visit here. Activate it and when leaving the US, switch to your own country Sim card.

Hi guys,

So, I bought a T-Mobile iPhone X from Apple (paid in full). I’m currently on a prepaid t mobile plan here in the US. I’m from Europe and will only be temporarily in the US, also, I’ll be going back to Europe frequently. There Im on a plan with a local provider. Yesterday I tried to put my European sim into my new iPhone, and I got a message saying that I need to activate the phone with t mbobile.

The guy told me that I will be able to eventually use my phone in Europe but only after waiting for 50 days and having usd100 on my account. That should say odd, since I thought the t-mobile devices are unlocked.

I have not yet activated the device and did not start the device with the original or my t mobile sim in it.

Does anyone here know what I can do to not wait for so long to use it in Europe? I will be travelling back for a couple of weeks in two weeks time and would muc( rather use my new iPhone....

Many thanks for your help
some of this information is not correct. If you bought your phone at full price from the apple store, it would not give you the message. So please tell us in full and be exact.

It is clearly specified in the Apple.com Store that a fully paid T-Mobile iPhone X is UNLOCKED.

Even then, T-Mobile has it's limits.

I bought a Note 8 at launch outright, which was over two months ago and using the included device unlock app that T-Mobile includes on all Android phones, I still have not been able to unlock my Note 8. T-Mobile told me that even though I paid for it outright, I would still have to use it for 45 days before it would be unlocked. They also have a three device per year unlock limit and I've bought five phones this year alone.

I bought a S7 Edge back in February and paid it in full two months later and using the device unlock app included, the phone unlocked two minutes after I paid for it in full.

I haven't figured out why my Note 8 won't unlock yet and I haven't called since the day I purchased it to find out why. I still have two SEs that need unlocking and my new 7+.
