I recently updated my MacOS from Mojave to Catalina. I am running Pages and Numbers. The App Store app shows they were "purchased" in 2017 from the App Store -- I guess that was when they were last updated. Current Pages is version 8.1. Current Numbers is version 6.1. The app store does not give me the option to update (I guess I would need to go to Big Sur or Monterrey to get the present versions which I do not want to do yet). Does anyone know how I can simply update Numbers from 6.1 to 10.0 or 10.1? It should be able to run on Catalina as far as I know. Thanks.

Can confirm I´m running Pages and Numbers 11.1 on Catalina. Have you updated to latest Catalina 10.15.7?
Otherwise try uninstalling Pages/Numbers and reinstalling via App Store.

Thanks for the idea but this only made matters worse. I am on Catalina but after deleting the app the App Store now requires me to upgrade to MacOS 11 before installing. It will not reinstall anything. That is painful.

Instead of searching for Pages/Numbers as new apps in App Store, now revisit the earlier purchases for your account you mentioned in the first post. There should be a cloud-symbol next to your earlier purchases, indicating that you can redownload the deleted apps. That way you should get the latest version your current OS supports.

Yes thanks very much for your suggestion. I tried pressing on the cloud to re-download but that failed as well saying I needed to update to MacOS 11. It is so strange! I do have a back-up of my apps but I really wanted to upgrade Pages and Numbers to the more current versions, which you confirmed are compatible with Catalina. I really do not understand how you previously were allowed to update to Numbers 11 while using Catalina but I assume you did it while Catalina was the current version of MacOS. I guess I am stuck on Pages 8.1 and Numbers 6.1 unless I update to Big Sur.

I just tried this, as I was curious how to get older versions of Apple's apps.
I deleted the version of Numbers, which was running on Catalina.
And, downloaded and reinstalled the same version of Numbers. Here's how to do that...
Open the App Store, then click on your name (lower left corner of the appstore window)
That should bring up a page showing your purchased apps. You should see a "cloud" symbol for apps that you have purchased, but are not currently installed on your Mac. Click that cloud symbol.
If you need an older version, but newer versions are not compatible, you should get a notification that there are older versions, and it will download the latest version that will run on your Mac
And, click the download button, wait for the download and install, and that should be it...

Well, one difference is that my Catalina-machine is an old MBP 2012 that can not update past Catalina. Pages 11.1 was released June 2021 so I assume I updated from Pages 10.2 then. Current version of Pages 11.2 was released sept 2021 and is running on my Monterey-mac.

But all this aside, this is the method that should work, just as @DeltaMac confirmed above.
However, it is also obvious different users experience varies. Check this previous thread, especially post #6 and #9. It almost seems like a little voodoo...

So try fiddle with it a little more. Do a restart, why not once in Safe mode to get rid of some old caches. Did you check with Software Update that you have the latest Catalina 10.15.7? Log out of App Store and log in again. Try an other day when Apples servers are in a better mood. Wait until full moon.... Good luck! ?

Many thanks to IngoX and DeltaMac!! Your guidance is greatly appreciated. I was able to update both Pages and Numbers to version 11.1 per your instructions. This was exactly what I wanted.
