rottendrunk, thanks for the information and the extra bit of confidence I needed to finally get this done - have owned the 10.6.3 pack for a year! Anyway, as did yours, mine went off without a hitch. Of course, I have a backup image just in case which I'll probably have to use for a few old applications until I upgrade those.

Thanks again!

Tiger won't see updates!

hey guys I could use some help. I'm trying to help my friend update her mac 10.4 tiger to lion, which first you have to update to snow leopard to get the app store. Apple says you do this by checking for updates, the problem is her computer doesn't see that there are any updates. I thought maybe if I got a dvd of snow leopard we could do it that way, but her cd drive is jammed and broken. Either we can get the drive fixed and try the dvd, or try to figure out why the mac doesn't see it needs to update. Any suggestions?

Alright everyone... Here is how I got both my MBP's to Snow leopard before going to Lion... FOR FREE.

I had a 13" MBP running Leopard and my Wife has a 15" MBP running Tiger...
They both had 2GHz Core 2 duo's with 2gigs of mem...

I decided to head over to my local apple store and look around and see if they had any Snow Leopard disc. My original plan was just to buy the disc and force install on my wife's MBP since it didn't even have Leopard on it yet...

As I walked in, i was greeted and I asked about the disc.. They prompted me to go to the Genius Bar and ask a tech, which I did. I get to the desk and explained that my end goal was to have both machines running Lion so that My wife and I could finally get both of our iPhones connected to iCloud and our home base network. The tech was super nice and said, instead of using the disc, I could bring in my two MBP's and they will install it on both.

At first I was skeptical and thought, maybe the guy was just being nice and since I didn't have my MBP's I would have to come back and then expected to be turned away.

A few days later I booked the Genius appt and met with another Tech, I Basically laid it all out in honesty and said I wasn't expecting it for free but that I would like to have both units upgrade to SL so that I could move on to Lion.

 To my surprise the Tech said, "Sure No Problem," and then upgraded both Machines. At the end I offered again to pay for something, but the tech said no problem and just recommend I upgrade my Mem to at-least 4gigs each so that Lion would run more smoothly once I upgrade to that. He also recommend I try New egg or Amazon which I did and got a Kingston 8gig stick for $33.

This experience has definitely been an extremely positive one. I never once asked for a hand out before being given the offer first and to have the friendly customer service support go along with it is just icing on the cake. I really hope that by me posting this I don't get anyone in trouble at that store by the Apple Gestapo.

Anyway, I'm having my mem delivered tomorrow and will then upgrade to Lion using the App Store. Hope this all helps. Here is a link to find out what mem is best for your machines...

successful upgrade

I recently inherited an original MacBook Pro (circa 2006) which was running OS X 10.4.1.1 with the following configuration:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,2
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 2 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B03
SMC Version (system): 1.5f10
Serial Number (system): W86183METHY
Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0016CB955E45
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

Not wanting to spend a lot of money on it I decided to try the 'straight to Snow Leopard' route by purchasing the disc from the Apple store for £26. I simply popped the disc in, followed the instructions and waited for about 45 mins while it installed.

The bottom line is, IT WORKS PERFECTLY!

No need to buy Leopard first. For £26 you get OS X 10.6.3 (which then updates to 10.6.8 when you click the software update) and you'll think it's the best few pounds/dollars you've ever spent!

Tricky upgrade 10.4 to 10.6 on MBP 1.83GHZ Intel Core Duo

Upgraded a friend's Macbook Pro that had an Intel 1.83GHz Core Duo in it. Used a 5 license Snow Leopard family pack disc. The MBP would not detect the SL disc whatsoever. Doesn't even detect at startup. It however can read any other random data discs I had. This is what I did...
First and foremost before anything, we need to backup our data. I booted the friend's MBP into target disk mode, connected it via a Firewire cable to my Mac and got a backup image of the hard drive which was only 33GB. This will allow you to restore everything back if needed. This can be one from Disk Utility. From my Mac I was able to launch the SL install disk and selected to install it on the friend's MBP. Voila, 45 minutes later and the install was done. Took another 15 minutes to update from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8.
Once completed, I grabbed the Home folder from the image created earlier so my friend still had all their data and old settings. Though since the hard drive was formatted, they will need to re-install any apps they had which is fine since they now have a clean install of Snow Leopard.

How 2 upgrade 10.4 to 10.6, but ther's one catch

My MBP has a broken screen, I am using a separate monitor connected to DVI port. When I try to load Snowy, my monitor goes blank and I can't see what I'm doing, any suggestions?

Thanks

Try to do the same steps in a working Mac so you can install Snow Leopard blindly and after you can setup the external monitor.

If the harddrive is using a Master Boot Record rather then GUID, you can not upgrade OS X on it, use disk utility to see how the partitions are set up.

im trying to do this right now and mine is GUID and it still says that it cannot be installed
