Hi there!

I haven't done much jailbreaking since iPhone 3GS, so I was wondering, what is the latest method of upgrading from iOS 7 (iPhone 4S, jailbroken) to 8.4?

As far as I know, 8.4 is the latest iOS version that is untethered and taiG is used to jailbreak it.

The problem is; iOS 9 is available for iPhone 4S, so if I just click on "Restore", iTunes will upgrade it straight to iOS 9, which I don't want.

So how do I upgrade to 8.4 and not past that? I remember using tools such as TinyUmbrella and iFaith to stitch blobs and restore by holding SHIFT and clicking restore, then selecting the stitched firmware.

Is this still the method or is there something new?

You don't. The old methods don't work since iOS 7. Your choice is jailbroken on 7 or stock on 9

If Apple is not signing it you can't install it.

You mean SHSH blobs don't work anymore? I think Cydia has them saved for this iPhone (it's my not phone, so I have to check to verify).

The Odysseus OTA 2 may work for you. It requires a jailbroken version of iOS and is normally used to downgrade to either 8.4.1 or 6.1.3, so I don't know if it can be used for an upgrade. Normally it's impossible to upgrade to a version of iOS that's unsigned, so SHSH blobs are of very limited value.

hi,
sorry to jump in on this thread but can you still jailbreak 8.4.1?
Been given an ipad 2 that's not been used in a while.

Nope, there is no tool for it and most probably it will never happen. It was just an experiment.

Not that I know of, which is odd considering a jailbreak was released for 9.0.2. I doubt 8.4.1 will ever see one at this point.

Sorry for asking a repeated question. But is unsigned/signed iOS a new thing? Since iOS 7, as eyoungren said?

If SHSH blobs are practically useless now, what do people use them for? And is that why Cydia does not list them at the top anymore (they used to list the saved SHSH versions at the top of the application).

I would really appreciate it if someone could please clue me in on what happened since iOS 6. Cause I've been absent from the jailbreaking community for a while now.

SHSH blobs are worthless since IOS7. Apple changed the way of signing IOS and that was it.

Here is the "change" as mentioned by Saurik himself.

Basically, SHSH was replaced by AP Ticket with iOS 7. AP Ticket is a more secure form of blobs and only Apple has the master keys.

You would either have to break into Apple corporate, find where they store those keys, steal them, escape and then disseminate them (by which point Apple has probably deactivated them) or have someone at Apple leak them.

The reason you can downgrade an iPhone 4 (and some other devices) is because the baseband exploit was never patched by Apple. But they did patch it with the 4s and above.

People still save blobs and are advised to do so on the slim chance that they may be useable again if anyone ever figures out how to defeat AP Ticket.

But as of right now, if the firmware is not signed by AP Ticket there is no upgrading or downgrading to it.

Hope that helps!

Is this legit then? http://www.iphonehacks.com/2015/10/...iphone-4s-ipad-3-and-ipad-2-to-ios-8-4-1.html

Clearly says for iPhone 4S/5, to downgrade from 9.x.x to 8.4.1. But based on what I'm reading in this thread it seems that software is completely fake?
No, that's real. But you have to have one of those devices. Essentially, anything that is 64 bit (5s and above) this won't work with. And I believe you need the blobs for the version you want to go to.

Of course you also need to be jailbroken.

In the context of this thread however, what the OP wanted to do isn't possible on the majority of devices out there now. The 5 and 4s are no longer the dominant iPhone devices.

It's not necessary to have saved blobs on supported devices for Odysseus to work. It's a clever tool.

I believe it's only for versions that Apple is still signing OTA for that you don't need blobs

iOS versions that Apple isn't OTA signing for doesn't work without SHSH blobs

I could be wrong though
