How to upgrade if current iPhone upgrade program?

I'm being told by some that you are required to go into Apple stores to upgrade? Is this true? If so, it's a huge inconvenience for those who live hours away from an Apple Store.

Short answer: Yes, you have to go into an Apple Store, and yes it is a major inconvenience even for those who live close to Apple Stores since you have to depend upon their stock availability.
