After ordering a new iPhone on my line which wasn't upgrade eligible I realized I could have ordered it on my father in law's line that is.

Normally I think the process would have been to order the phone under his name (He's on my family plan) then switch the SIM cards and cancel his data plan...

However I didn't do it in that easy way. I ordered it through Apple.com and upgraded MY line at $450...

What can I do to fix this problem?

Can I bring it to the Apple Store this weekend and exchange the phone on my line, get my money back then buy it again on his line and pay less?

Does he need to be with me?

After I exchange it do I HAVE to activate the iPhone under his number before I can take the phone for myself? (Meaning he would have to be signed up for a data plan?)

Since he is using a dumb phone he doesn't have a data plan nor a mico SIM slot.. Meaning I would have to go to the AT&T store and get a new SIM card and go through the process of getting his phone working again yea?

I want to do with without putting the man out at all... He is almost 80.

What I would do (this assumes you are the account owner, it doesn't matter who uses the line):

1) Don't open or activate the iPhone you bought, just get the return process started
2) Order an iPhone on the line you want upgrade
3) Receive and activate iPhone on the line it was purchased under
4) Go to AT&T and get the SIMs swapped (the line with the dumb phone will need a new SIM as the old one will have been deactivated) and cancel the data plan on the dumb phone line

Boom!

It works but it would mean I would have to watch my Wife use her new 4S while I wait 2 weeks for a new one to come in by mail...

It would also mean I have to bother my father in law.. Maybe I can just ask to borrow his dumb phone and take it to AT&T myself.

I wonder if I can just return it to the Apple store and immediately rebuy or maybe there is something with their inventory system that wont let them do that... I can maybe claim to the guy that I ACCIDENTALLY ordered it for the wrong line.
