I have the 7 Plus and am on the AT&T Next plan that allows me to upgrade every 12 months. I'm just wondering whether I'll be able to preorder the iPhone 8 online (assuming pre-orders are available)? The Next program requires you to trade in your old phone so does that mean I will only be able to buy a new phone in person, or is there still a way to do it online? If I can do it online, will it work with both Apple and AT&T online sites? Any thoughts/information is greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, you have to pay a low amount $XX for an early upgrade or pay off your phone. Log in to your online account, chose a phone in their store, chose upgrade and you will be given two upgrade options.

You can do a phone trade in with Best Buy as well, but they won't give you that much for your phone.

That's something different. With the plan I'm on, I have the right to trade in the phone every 12 months - it is not considered an early upgrade. I think the only charge is the activation charge. I just want to better understand the mechanics, i.e., whether I can do it online or does it need to be done in person.

Im on Next as well and those are the options I get. Your phone has to be sent it and ATT pays for shipping. Call ATT if you have further questions.

Do you know if I can send the phone back after I purchase and receive the new phone?

The process is pretty simple if you buy online. If you purchase it through the AT&T website, you will get emails and a prepaid shipping label to send your old phone back into AT&T. Included are instructions for wiping your phone clean. I believe you have 30 days to do this without being charged the remaining amount for the phone, which in your case would be 50% of the retail value. So make sure to send it back in!

If you purchase the phone through Apple, the same process applies. You will receive instructional emails from either Apple or AT&T to return your old device. The only fee involved is your $25 activation fee which will be applied to the next bill, as well as sales tax on the new device at the time of purchase.

This is perfect, thanks so much for the explanation!

Thanks. I figured it was like this. I checked my balance last week to make sure I would be ready for next month.

Note that I took the deal AT&T offered last year of a 'free' iPhone 7 when using the AT&T Next plan. (Technically the AT&T Next Every Year plan - AT&T Next is a 30 month plan, AT&T Next Every year is a 24 month plan)

In my case, I 'pay' $27 or so every month, and get a 'credit' of $27 a month, so the phone is 'free'.

If I want to get an iPhone 8, I'll have to either
(a) give my iPhone 7 back to AT&T - neither owing or getting any money.
(b) pay the ~$400 remaining balance to AT&T and keep my phone.

In either case, I lose my remaining ~$400 in credits. The only way to keep those credits coming, ensuring my phone is still 'free' is to keep my iPhone 7.

By doing either (a) or (b), I'll sort of have paid ~$400 for my iPhone 7, then I'll now have to pay in full for the iPhone 8 for like $30/month for 2 years. (Of course I can then upgrade to the iPhone 8S doing the same thing the following year)

My brother is on my plan, do you have any idea if he can order on the night of preorders himself or do I have to do it for him?

As for the Next, try to make sure you are paid to 50% at least a week before the preorders begin, so maybe now even. I have read/heard people getting caught waiting for the payment to clear in time to qualify and miss the first evening.
