No, you don't get something for nothing.

Fair enough - although since Apple has already collected my music data through Genius, shouldn't be too hard to look up the info at the same time...

Oh well, one can dream. I added them manually anyway, so doesn't affect me.

And I have Apple Music anyway lol

Maybe Apple should improve the user interface for their music and messaging apps so tutorials aren't needed.

Not to defend the UI/UX of the Music app in general I agree that it gets confusing. But I am curious what the better solution for this specific feature is? This is a non-critical feature and it's only hidden behind 1-2 taps. What's the issue? Where would you put this feature?

It's easy to quickly judge these things, but as a software developer who often helps with UI/UX design, I am failing see a better place for this.

I've never understood why iTunes purchase music didn't have lyrics in its metadata.

In iOS 6 all you had to do was tap the artwork in the main player window. Simple, easy, direct.

I've been testing the lyrics and from my POV there is an issue with the sync of the personalize lyrics.

my old manual added lyrics are not been shown on apple music/icloud libray but if I make changes on a new added song the changes syncs. Also when returning to not personalize lyrics the sync do not work.

The issue is with the sync, maybe apple should create something to re-scan all our libraries on itunes and re-sync them with icloud library...

That metaphor only works if your old enough to remember vinyl record covers and CD liner notes where you literally flipped over a piece of cardboard/paper that was the actual album artwork.

It took me the longest time to find the repeat one button cuz it was hidden from sight by default till I remembered I could scroll down on the now playing card. smh

I had lyric in my music because I did it manually via iTunes.now none of the lyric show up for my music.
I don't use apple music

It appears to require an Apple Music subscription, not merely Purchased or Matched music. I purchased the Hamilton soundtrack through the iTunes store, and I don't see any lyrics. Same for every other Purchased or Matched song I tried. The menu item is simply not there.

So - this only works with an Apple Music subscription? I.E. - it won't add lyrics to my library of songs without the subscription?

lyrics does work in the Music App even if you do not pay to stream. I purchase all my music and I purchased an app on my mac called beatunes that adds lyrics for all my music (well almost all). Those lyrics are showing up for me. Actually I cant be sure if the lyrics are coming from Apple or beatunes, but I do see lyrics when I play my music.

I subscribe to iTunes Match (which technically doesn't seem to exist anymore) and none of my albums -- not the ones where I added lyrics myself nor any that I bought from Apple (including Hamilton, which is shown above with lyrics) -- shows an option to view lyrics. Apple should have put a big asterisk next to their announcement of the feature.
It exists.

Yeah, don't understand why this is being touted as a 'new' feature.

Here it is in iOS 5.1.1 as well (note example does not infringe anyone's IP in any way because it's just an example on one of my own tracks;)):

Pretty sure it was around before that too but I don't have my iOS 4 iPod Touch handy.

While I don't think it is great, my personal opinion is that this version of iTunes is better than the last few. I don't subscribe to iMusic (or Spotify or Pandora or whatever Google's service is) and I doubt I ever will. I have found most curated or matched via algorithm song matches not only get it wrong for me, but can't believe it when I tell them. 'BUT YOU LIKE BAND X!!!!! THEREFORE YOU MUST LIKE BAND Y!!!! NO? HOW ABOUT BAND Y THEN? MAYBE A LITTLE BAND Y?? HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED HOW MUCH LIKE BAND X THAT BAND Y IS??' After a while I'm down to like 10 songs that the station will play. And about every 3rd one is the band I keep disliking/thumbing down/skipping. I also like songs a lot older, and in many cases not as well known, as songs from the 1950's to the present, and for the most part those aren't available on music streaming stations, except for the extremely popular ones from those eras. This leave thousands of songs that people today never will hear.

The reason is an organization called NMPA. They are the an organization for songwriters of the music and they usually have a copyright on the lyrics. Most of the lyric websites don't pay the royalties that they are suppose to to publish the lyrics online. Many of the songwriters don't get a lot of money even if the song is a hit and is popular. I'm speaking especially of songwriters and not bands or performers who write their own songs specifically, but a lot of those artists don't like the lyric web sites http://www.hypebot.com/hypebot/2014...ites-release-new-unlicensed-site-ranking.html

I think they're probably coming from beatunes. I'm not seeing any automatic Apple lyrics in the Music (Musique) app. The menu option simply isn't there anywhere.

(Their French localisation of Musique needs some work too. In a few places, Bibliothèque touches icons or the middle is cut out.)

I subscribe to iTunes Match, but not Apple Music.

To those asking about songs purchased vs Apple Music, lyrics are intellectual property that can be licensed separately from the song itself thus having a license to the song does not necessarily entitle you to see the lyrics too. Apple licensed the lyrics specifically in conjunction with Apple Music thus the access for subscribers. It's not an Apple conspiracy to force anyone onto AM, you can thank the music industry eeking out a few more dollars on format change grounds.
Red herring, because you can add lyrics to your songs in iTunes manually.

Displaying THOSE would already be plenty enough, this way is just incredibly inconsistent.

It's starting to seem more and more these days that the attitude prevalent is "Our way or get over it." It's one thing to add functionality....but not at the cost of interfering with my custom work. Especially when I don't subscribe to Apple Music. It's looking as though they make practically no distinction between the offered service and the manually built libraries of users. My collection came from, in every case, my own hard copy albums. They shouldn't monkey with that.

I never really wanted to migrate from ITunes but there a million other options out there. In many cases seemingly much more friendly. Plex is looking more tempting with each ITunes revision.

Edit: The most annoying part: Completely fixable problems. I'm not looking for a pizza to be delivered every time I add a song to the library....I'm asking to leave certain things alone or give users the option to use/not use. They can completely remedy these problems...truth is IMO they just don't give a damn.
Video-wise I'll switch to Plex the moment they have play counts visible in their UI on clients.

Lack of H.265, categories (other than playlists), 10-bit color depth, styled subtitles and what seems a trend towards less features to fake simplicity are starting to annoy me.

That's what you get when the app and a specific, OPTIONAL service which only is a subset of the features of said app, share the same name.
GENIUS!

And look at all that black isn't it wonderful? Best music app ever, I miss it terribly.

i actually went out an bought an iphone 4 with iOS6 for my car. it's one of those mid-aughts models that came with 30-pin integration. After about the six or seventh time I nearly got in a wreck trying to toggle between songs and artist listings on my 5S, I went back to iOS6 and the easily visible, easily usable selection tools that dont make me go into a pull-down menu just to select what kind of listing i want to see. utter insanity. Also it was really nice to remove that heinously garish white 30 pin to lightning adapter out of what is otherwise an entirely black, aluminum and chrome interior (which matches the 4 perfectly)... oh yeah i should also add that adapter started fraying after about three months.

For people who aren't seeing their manually-added lyrics (like me):

Someone on the Apple Support forums suggests unsynching the music off your phone when you connect it to iTunes, and then re-synching it. Seems to have worked for at least one person. I might try this myself later.

Each of these threads show someone with this problem (manually-added lyrics not showing in the music app in iOS 10), and success with the same solution (unsynching and re-synching the music via iTunes).

This thread notes there is a new "custom lyrics" check box in iTunes on the mac. Perhaps it is playing a role?
