i can connect 1tb hard to apple tv which located in the living.

and i can back it up wirelss stright to the hard that connect to apple tv from any where in the house... comprende? conveniently:eek:

If you do that, then use rsync over ssh to sync your data to it and ignore Time Machine.

I thought the Apple TV had a pretty much full blown Mac OS X 10.4 system.

Far from it.

If you hack the box, you can get access to the system via ssh and I would think you could enable sharing of the hard drive. Won't Time Machine work with a network attached drive?

Time Machine works with a network attached drive that shows up as an Airport Disk, but not just any network share.

It’s not full blown 10.4. Apple’s removed most of the services required for file sharing to run.

The OP would have to hack his Apple TV and enable AFP to make Time Machine work properly. I’m not sure if they’ve had success enabling AFP since the 2.x, not to mention the 3.x updates. It could work with protocols other than AFP, but it likely wouldn’t be reliable.

Either way, it’s not a practical solution and would require hacks on both sides to make it work. Fun weekend project, but I wouldn’t rely on it as my primary backup solution.

Get a Mac Mini with a mini display port to HDMI and hook it up to the tv, add an external 1tb hdd and set it up as a network share for Time Machine on the MacBook. Use Plex or FrontRow on the Mac Mini. Done.
