Just a heads up. It also pops up on the riding mower. I also found that the riding mower pads your activity rings with a whole bunch of steps I’m guessing the vibration of the mower fools it

I actually really like this feature. Verizon messages and Samsung's android has had this feature for a while.. I am not sure about vanilla android however.

I have a way shorter version.

Step 1: put phone on silent.
Step 2: put phone in pocket and keep it there.
Step 2: ???
Step 3: profit.

And if you're the kind of person who can't keep his hands off of his phone and thinks it's more important than paying attention to the road then you shouldn't even have a drivers licence.
And if you're the kind of person who puts their phone in a cradle to use as a gps?

Speaking as someone who takes transit to work - not being able to disable this completely is damned annoying.

It’s very easy to completely disable and have it activate only when you want to. Just go to Settings / Do Not Disturb / scroll to the bottom / under DND While Driving click Manually. Now it won’t automatically do anything at all. Easy

Nice feature, but if someone is determined to be distracted while driving, this won't stop them.

You're not getting this.

I have this already set to Manual - but iOS 11 still pops up a window which "reminds" me that Do Not Disturb While Driving is a thing and can be enabled. I keep seeing it on the train when I pull out my phone.

This sounds really nice, especially since you can turn it off temporarily, so easily. If it was defaulted it would probably prevent a bunch of accidents and deaths.

Something must be wrong (not saying your fault). Because when I set mine to manual I got that notice saying there is that new feature only one time. I dismissed the notice and since then I’ve never gotten a notice while driving and I’ve driven I would say over 20 times since updating to iOS 11. Must be some bug for some people. Hope they address the bug but it’s clearly not affecting all phones because I only had to clear the notice once. It would be frustrating for sure if it kept popping up. I’m just not seeing it one mine except that one time. So I’m hoping it’s a bug since you are seeing it and I’m not and something Apple address soon

I’ve got mixed feelings over how this works with Favourites, i.e. calls come through from your favourites even if it’s activated DND while driving. Now, when I’m not driving, I want my wife and kids to be able to reach me 24/7, even if DND is on. However, when I’m driving, it’s a different story, I want DND to be absolute, but it doesn’t look like I can set it up like that.

I hope that you are right! But as we've seen in other areas of iOS 11, "off" does not always mean "off". :p

Ugh! You’re right about that WiFi off thing! I hope Apple agrees soon that if you clear a notification it means you’ve seen it and you don’t want to be reminded again. I’m hoping it some strange server side thing on their end. It’s possible they want to push this new feature so for some reason they keep reminding some phones about it even though they cleared the notification. I’m hoping if it’s a server side push notification thing to promote the feature since iOS 11 is still new that after awhile they will respect users clearing of the notice and stop notifying

I hear you but I think the way it works kind of makes sense. If I start my gps app before I start driving I noticed that it works just fine. I know that might not work for you always but I think the thinking Apple had is that most (and I mean most not all) people are likely to start a gps direction BEFORE they start driving. It won’t apply in every case (yours for example), but I think it most situations as it relates to things such as gps it kind of works pretty okay and makes sense the way it works. Most people should not be fidgeting with the gps and and trying to input directions WHILE they are driving imho.

Actually this is happening before I start driving. As soon as I get in my car it's entered DNDwD mode. I set my iPhone on the clip on the dash, and try to open my GPS before I've even put the car in gear. It would be difficult to have the app running before I even get in the car, as my hands are usually full with coffee cup, iPad, and work things.

Oh I see. Yeah that would be frustrating. That is understandable and would bother me too. I wonder though if a setting change might help out. When DND Driving is set to Automatic it isn’t suppose to kick in until you’ve driven awhile or first go above a certain speed limit. I’m not sure what the exactly what the automatic algorithm is, but I know it never engages right away. I have to be driving for a bit. If yours is engaging right when you first get in the car my guess is that you have the DND Driving setting set to When Connected to Car Bluetooth. That is the only explaination I can think of that would cause it to engage right away. Try setting it to automatic (if you want to use this feature of course) and see if that works better for your scenario

Another of Apple's recent brainless 'innovations'. I guess we should just be glad it can be turned off.
Brainless because it's something that various people have been asking for and will use?

I don't think "Do Not Disturb While Driving" is a bad idea. I don't necessarily even think enabling it by default is a bad idea.

I find current implementation, though, is rather... sub-optimal.

Agreed. If it saves even just one life somewhere in the world it is great.

Unfortunately it sucks if you are not the driver! (Currently).

How do you change or turn off the second text message that begins with “I’m not receiving...” and just auto reply with your custom message? It seems to be a default no matter how I configure it.

...

Hard to get spoken turn-by-turn directions to my destination that way.

Nice feature, but if someone is determined to be distracted while driving, this won't stop them.

Certainly. I see lots of drivers putting on makeup, unwrapping burgers, lighting cigarettes, playing with their kids, and etc.

Yup. Needs improvement before it becomes legally required, or an extra liability if found not to be turned on during an auto accident.
