How to use electronic inking in a Mac?

Does anybody know how to use electronic ink in a Mac? I'm not particularly concerned with on-the-fly handwriting recognition. Instead, what I want is to take a PDF or Word file and then mark it up with e-ink, or else take freehand notes and then insert them into another application, like into MacJournal. I can do a lot of this on my tablet PC. I know the ModBook is coming, but I don't even know if it is structured to do that kind of editing.

I tried to do something with a Wacom Graphire 3 tablet, but I wasn't successful.
