Google would probably never release this to the public, but I bet there's a version that will identify people and pull up their Google+ profile.

That you have to sign in to use this makes it much much worse from a privacy standpoint.

Signing in may not have been necessary. It looks like some people got it working just by closing and restarting.

I tried deleting the app and reinstalling. The icon appeared the first time I opened the app, and this time I wasn’t signed in.

You'd be surprised what people will give up just to get stuff for free. It's literally the business model of Google. Give up everything, get everything free. It's only when you go for the paid stuff (Google Apps for example) from Google, they actually have privacy policies that don't mean selling your data.
