hi, i really like the idea of photostream, but i dont use iphoto and not interested in purchasing or start using it at all...

is there any way to get it working like its on a pc, a finder folder?

Not really. It requires iPhoto 11. I did come up with a work around, but it requires you to have a separate PC and install iCloud for Windows on it. I then had my pictures stored in Dropbox on the PC, which allowed me to access them outside of iPhoto on my Mac. But most folks don't have both a Mac and a PC.

Does it need to be 11? Or can it be previous versions?
