How to use unplugged Macbook Pro in clamshell mode with external monitor

I attached a nice monitor to my 2014 Macbook Pro via thunderbolt connection. However I do not want to keep my computer plugged to AC outlet all day long. However when I unplug it, the screen goes blank since the lid is closed. Is there a way to use unplugged Macbook Pro in clamshell mode with external display?
