How to view notifications the proper way?

When I get a notification, say from WhatsApp or Instagram, I tap the button on the side (the wheel) but then the watch wakes up and the notification disappears. What is the proper way to actually see that notification without having to manually to into the notifications section but by simply viewing it once it comes on?

I swipe down. I don't press any buttons.

Yeah I’d think this is what people do anyway.

Mostly swipe down. I rarely respond straight away. Almost never on my watch.

Two scenarios for me. If I get a notification and I'm looking at it right then I will just read it and if its long I will roll the bezel to scroll.

If to much time has passed I swipe down and then do the same thing.

I modified all my Default Replies so I can text back really quickly. If its more than a "Sounds good!" or "I'll call you right back" quick reply then I'll use my iPhone or Mac.
