I don't have Visio. What would be the best way for to to view a confidential (i.e. I cannot upload it to another website for conversion to another format) .vsd file?

Have you used it?
download omnigraffle trial ?

Link to Omnigraffle

Thanks for the suggestion, but unless I buy it, it becomes a short term solution.

Have you used it? If I buy it will I be able to seamless edit files created in MS Visio on a PC, and vice versa, i.e. send a colleague a .vsd I created with this and have them edit it.

I use it a lot - almost everyday love it for what I need it for - have been for over 10 years - great software

That being said - I don't have to work with Visio files - not sure about how it will work for you there - suggest you try the 14 day trial and test it out on the visio files - you will need the Pro version for the visio support and even then I am not sure how well it works back and forth with Visio users. Maybe another Macrumors member will chime in and add more info - or you could shoot them an email on their support page?

In the mean time - Also might be worth checking out - Lucidchart
