For some reason my iphone 4 doesn't check mail automatically. I have to open the mail app in order to receive mail. My friend has a iphone 4 as well and his seems to work fine. None of us has data roaming on and I can't figure out what I need to change to get it working.

Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data > Turn on Push if you're using an Exchange server or change the Fetch settings to Every 15 minutes, 30 Minutes or Hourly and not Manually.

Thanks that helped a lot.

On another unrelated note, I want my ical to sync with gcal. I already have Gmail linked with "mail", "Calendars", and "notes" on. Do I still need to add gcal separately? And is there a way to sync gcal back with ical?
