Mine was pretty frustrating. I don't really know who I can blame for it, but all the same, I was bouncing between the Apple Store and an AT&T corporate store between 7:45 am and 5:00 pm. Here's the short(est) version (that can possibly be told).

-- checked my ATT account status online last night; already knew that I was eligible for subsidized price, since I bought the original iPhone on launch day last year.

-- went to the mall at 7:45 this morning...was about the 175th person in line. Since it was an Apple Store, wasn't worried.

-- listened to the announcements made by the employees, realized that I forgot to take off my FAN#. Called ATT, got that done in a matter of minutes, and checked my account again, and FAN# was off my account.

-- stood in line quite patiently, and actually had a pretty good time, even through all of the ATT server outages.

-- got into the store, and got to the point where I met the specialist who was going take care of me, and he was awesome.

-- in the middle of the EasyPay transaction, got some sort of error saying that the transaction could not be completed. He called ATT, and they said that they hadn't seen that before, and to just try it again.

-- tried transaction again, and got a message saying that I was not eligible for the subsidized pricing. wtf?!

-- went outside the store to call ATT, found that my v.1 iPhone had no service. Walked all around the mall, and outside, and still no service. My phone was no longer receiving ATT service.

-- went back in the store, talked to my specialist, he called around, talked to some of the managers in the store, and apparently this happened to one other person. Apparently our service had gotten ported to the phones we were trying to purchase. Checked my ATT account, and sure enough, was being charged for 3G plan, as well as the $18 activation fee, but hadn't gotten a phone. We both had to go to an ATT store and get a new SIM card to get it straightened out.

-- went to ATT, had to wait in line, got a new SIM card. called ATT to make sure everything was straightened out. Was told that even though I had gotten a new SIM, the eligibility for subsidized pricing could not be reversed. Talked to ATT some more, and after about a half hour, they told me that I would have to pay full price for the phone, and then call them back with my specialist afterward, and tell them that my situation needed to be upgraded to an "urgent case," which would in turn allow them to refund me $200 for the phone, effectively having me pay subsidized pricing for it (good on ATT for that).

-- bought the phone, all was good, other than that they ran out of the black agent18 case I wanted. called ATT CS, and spent about 45 minutes on the phone with the woman; most of what she said consisted of "hello? Can you hold for a little while longer? OK, thanks." Finally got it all ironed out.

In the end, it all worked out, but just jumping through all the hoops was a pain. I applaud ATT and Apple for finally making it work, but man, it took forever. I do understand that they were under a lot of pressure today, and I hate complaining about what happened, but it was just way frustrating, especially when I had no working phone for about an hour.

On the plus side, I was there with two of my friends, both of whom were jumping ship from TMobile (one's contract was up, the other just had it with Tmo and elected to pay the ETF). Their process in getting their family plan was smooth sailing, and their numbers ported without an issue, so I was glad for them.

At least now we've all got our phones, so I'm thankful for that!

my experience was one of the worst I have experienced. shuttled between an apple store and an att store and back again due to some technicality that att nor apple mentioned in their "guides to get iReady". what a bunch of crap.

whatever, i got my phone.

Very pleasant experience

Arrived at the Tysons Corner Center (Virginia) Apple store at around 5:20-5:30 AM, something like that....was either 34th or 35th in line, not sure which. Had nice people on both sides of me and we all chatted. The Apple concierges brought out bottled water for each of us, then later the mall employees brought out folding canvas stools for us to sit on. Coffee from Dunkin' Donuts came along next -- what more could one want? :) The line grew progressively longer behind me and stretched on down through the mall and probably out the entrance doors at one end....... As it got closer to the time, we all started getting ourselves organized for the entry into the store and that was when it was announced that the folding canvas stools were ours to keep. Now THAT was neat!!!

The first group of us went into the Apple store and the staff had things pretty efficiently arranged. I was helped by a young man who took me over to show me the two new iPhones, one black, one white, and I immediately realized that I wanted a white one. He fetched it for me and then also collected the accessories that I also had on my list (dock, extra plug, etc.). i decided not to waste his time or that of the people still out there waiting to get in by trying to pick a case just then. Since I am an owner of the original iPhone, the necessary transition business didn't take all that long and then he took me on over to the activation station, where I was helped by a very nice young woman. She slit the external wrapping on the box, peeled it back, then handed me the box, inviting me to open it, which I did. I fondled my new iPhone for a brief minute or so and then we carried on with the activation process. This was early enough that there was no problem with iTunes and the activation/registration. She offered to set up my email for me and ran into a couple of little snags there, one which she figured out and the other which I later figured out. Once all was finished, I spent some time trying to decide which case to buy for my new iPhone, and once I'd finally made up my mind (a process which took longer than the entire other piece had!) I was on my way out. There were still many, many people waiting in line and I fired off a couple of photos with my new iPhone to capture the moment.

I stopped for a leisurely breakfast and then when I got home decided that the first order of business should be to go ahead and run the 2.0 update on my now "old" iPhone..... I got things set up on one of my Macs and then got on another one so that I could do email and surf MR. As I was reading posts on MR I was simultaneously realizing that, uh-oh, updating my first-gen iPhone wasn't going to be a quick procedure..... Indeed it wasn't, and it took quite a lot of time before I finally was able to do that and then to go ahead and sync the new iPhone.....

For me, the wait was fun, the Apple store was good and the outcome was excellent. I am truly sorry to realize that for so many people things didn't turn out so well after all.

Smooth experience here.

At 7am, they gave 10 cards out to the first 10 in line, I was 10, and said we could leave and come back at 8am.

At 8am, they checked our eligibility through a phone in line before letting us first 10 in the store. Went to an employee right away. Note: In the middle of the transaction I asked if they got the 3G dock and what the price was. He thought the dock was already included, and they didn't have it.

First he let me know that I'd be unbricking the iPhone later at home with iTunes.

Asked my cell number, then my ID. A runner got the 16gig iphone black. He left it sealed and scanned the package. After small delay, I signed a pad for the contract.

Then he rung up the total, $336 after tax. Swiped my Amex, signed again

Then he put the iPhone box in a bag and said I was good to go. I looked inside if there was a new sim card or something and asked. He said no, just use your old sim card and activate it on iTunes.

So I was driving home at 8:10am. Sadly, iTunes was freaking so I took a nap an around 12:30pm I managed to activate it.

--------------------------
A guy that was one of the first 10 had a horrible issue. He was 100% sure he was eligible. Hadn't bought a new phone for 5 years. He was even in there weeks ago to confirm eligibility at the same ATT store and they said yes. They also activated a new sim card (maybe a 3G version) that he put in one of his old phones to hold him over to the upgrade. They must have messed something up. Their only solution was to add a new line, lose his cell number, cancel the other line, and go through loads of trouble, like getting his roll over minutes back, crazy crap. I wonder how long it took for him to get out of there. He already waited 8 hours in line.

the worst experience ever!!!! 3 1/2 hours at the Apple Counter!!!

So I went to the Apple store @ sherman Oaks ,CA

Everything seem to be fine... I was Number 26th, so I was like yea.. i should be out of here about 830 and go eat break fast and then work... So the guy was bringing me up and everything was going smooth till, he got an error saying upgrade fail and unable to upgrade phone... so this ended up taking 3 1/2 hours to get it done... I literally was with this guy trying to get my iPhone set up for that long... I was his first iPhone buyer and it took him that long... he called ATT so many times and I kept repeating my info... after a while he knew my info... seriously ... I was one of the first ones and I even saw people that kept coming in getting their iPhones set up and I was the only one left out of all the first Batch... but yeah finally It went through and he tried activating it on iTunes since we made it to the last step and it wouldn't work... so he said i can do it at home... but I am exhausted from being at the Apple store 3 1/2 hours trying to get my iPhone setup and get this... my older iphone was de activated and i had nothing to use... so i was stuck.... really bad!!!!! experience!!!!

well i was at att i was 13th in line.... they opened and they let 5 people in.. i was there until 850 and not one of them cam out.. we had to leave to go to work so i am going to the apple store tmrw to get one:apple::apple:

Mine was pure horror. I waited in line for over 7 hours. I own the 1st gen iPhone. I was at willowbend mall in Plano, TX. When I was ready to purchase I was told "oh you get a corporate discount through your employer sorry you have to go to an ATT store bye bye" End of story. Pathetic.

Worst Apple product buying experience EVER! In-store activation just kills the experience. Waiting in line for 7+ hours was just insane.

Worst Experience at an Apple Store EVER!

I hate to add to the general negativity, but I'm only being honest to hopefully encourage Apple to try something different in the future. While my title says it's my worst experience ever at an Apple Store, that is because my experience have been good for the most part.

Went to Apple Store @ Kahala Mall (Honolulu, Hawai'i) and got there when the mall's doors opened at 6:00am. After joining the queue, we were all having a good time and the mood was generally upbeat. Apple employees were a bit fake in the enthusiasm (you could tell they didn't want to be there that early), but otherwise tried to be helpful. On a positive note, they were passing out free Starbucks ice coffee which I thought was a nice gesture to those in line.

After the first group of people went in, I thought great, I'm only 15 people back, with Apple's estimates of 15 min a customer...it shouldn't be too long. Boy was I wrong!!! 15, 20, 30mins go by and I don't even see anyone coming out of the store with an iPhone. Finally after an hour, the first person comes out. At this point, people started to get impatient as we kept getting the corporate line, "yes...the activation is quick, you'll be in an out in 15 mins..." or, "what activation problem...never heard anything here..."

Finally, my turn rolls around after at around 9:30. Excellent, I'll be out of there and back to work by 10...15 min, right??? ;) The sales person takes my info and punches it into his handheld, and it gives him some AT&T error. After dancing around the store for an 30mins, he finally decided to get on the phone with AT&T. Obviously, the lines to AT&T were swamped, and it was another 30 mins to get someone on the line. I was really pissed at this point and thought, this is the worst experience I've had at a mobile phone store EVER! I thought Apple was suppose to change the industry and spread the same excellent customer service I've come to experience from Apple.

After 2 hours in the store (5 1/2 hours total), I finally walk out of the store with an activated iPhone.

I'm not sure who to point the blame, because in my case, it was both Apple and AT&T. I understand why they had to change the activation method this time around, but Apple really needs to weigh the costs if it's going to start upsetting some of its most loyal customers. When the 3rd generation iPhone comes out next year, I hope they go back to a home activation method. Maybe put a credit card hold on the buyers card in the event they don't activate. There has to be some better way to do this.

While I'm happy to finally have this phone, it really kills a lot of the excitement with all these problems.

Anyone else at Kahala today???

Cherry Hill, NJ Apple store today....have to say, I've got no complaints about the Apple employees. For the most part they were extremely courteous and professional.

Got in line around 9am, and there were already I'd guess anywhere from 150-200 people in line. After a few hours they came around asking questions about qualifying for purchase. Found out that you can't even have FAN on your account (at first they said no active discounts), but the Apple employee most graciously brought out a store phone for myself and my friend to use. Called up AT&T had them drop the FAN, handed the phone to my friend and he does the same.

Finally get in the store around 2:20pm. My friend's transaction went through just fine. Mine got blocked by the IRU error. Called AT&T, they basically stonewalled me. We can't fix it, you have to go to a Corporate Store. So I leave, go to the Corporate Store. They show my account as being completely private, no FAN whatsoever.

Around 4:00 I go back to the Apple store, and thankfully was able to get in with them still having stock. STILL getting the IRU error. Called up AT&T, now they say Apple is screwed up, that APPLE's software can't read their system, and that I have to buy the phone from AT&T directly (at least a week till they get more stock). The Apple rep tried half a dozen different ways to get things set up, nothing, always the IRU error. So I ask him to try it as a new purchase.....that went through no problem, oddly enough. So by about 5pm I walked out of the Apple Store with a new 16gb 3G iPhone. Albeit with an extra account to my name I'm not happy about!

WELLLL.....called up AT&T, and am trying to get this fiasco solved. They found someone who found out what the problem was (supposedly), and removed it from my account, so if everything goes well I just need to walk into the Apple Store tomorrow and have them reactivate it with the old line, then go back to the Corporate Store and close the new account.

All told, Apple went absolutely above and beyond the call of duty in helping me out, and I have to commend them. The AT&T reps (aside from the last lady I spoke to who was an absolute dream) were...not so much.

My Experience was an interesting one. After waiting for 2 hours, I finally get to the front of the line and told that there are no black iPhones left. So I decideon a white one. I wanted 16gb anyways so I didn't mind. Once I went to the register at this particular Att store, I had a rep that I had a problem with another day. He was trying to sell me accessories for a free phone for family saying saying the phone is free but have to buy $70 worth of accessories. Stupid idiot, so I knew right away I would have problems. He tells me I'm not eligible for an upgrade. I had my iPhone since last year. So I keep telling him to check the comp. He keeps telling me I have to pay 500, so I flipped out and started cursing at him and I was about to leave when the manager came and asked me what happened. I explained it to him and he looked it over and saw I was eligible and by now everyone in the store was looking at us and the manager started yelling at the rep cuz the rep let other people go like this as well. That guy felt like **** afterwards when I told I know more about what's going on thqn him in front of his manager. Then iTunes didn't work... What a day

Harlem ATT store

at&t store in manhattan beach
arrived around 6:30 a.m.
we were numbers 63 & 64 in line
waited 3 hours to get to the reg
took 1.5 hours to port our numbers and walk out with no usable phones

while we waited in line, a couple of volunteers came through with the credit apps, bottled water, and phone counts. they let us know how many the store got; 50 8gig, 40 16 gig - 20 of each color. they were very good about going through the inventory count by the half-hour.

overall, if i had to do this again i would probably have arrived the night before and slept outside. i am not the most patient person in the world :( plus i missed a half a day of work. when i was told you could only get one phone per person i had to rearrange my shift to only work 4 hours, since i didnt want to get in trouble for being late lol...however when i got to work, i was reading on msn about the launch in cupertino or san jose or something, whever wozniak was, they let the first guy in line buy two! one for him and one for his wife. how is that fair??

5th Ave store, New York NY. Stared the line July 10th at 10pm, i would say i was 30-35th person in line. Zune constantly playing. Started moving at 7 to front of store. Crazy people moved aside (JULY 4th campers). Went into store at 8:03 AM. Walked downstairs to find about 60 apple employees clapping and cheering. I was outside and making a call on my new Iphone at 8:22AM. STAFF WAS TOP NOTCH!! VERY WELL TRAINED A+++

Avon, IN

Excellent, mostly.

I was 1st in line at 3:50 AM and I think there were around 30-35 people in line before 8:00. The manager takes the first seven of us aside to make sure we are eligible and know what we want.

At 8:00, after much cheering, I was directed to a salesman, asked for the 16 gig black, scanned the barcodes, got my contact info, paid, signed 2 years of my life away, and he activated my phone. At 8:08 I was out the door, by 8:12, I was home playing with my new iPhone.

The only thing that made me mad was he took the plastic off the phone and set it on the counter. He was ready to get me another phone when I spoke up, but I said it was cool.

I don't know how many phones that store had, but people were still pulling in the parking lot when I was leaving. The manager mentioned that they had limited stock and that they may not get to serve everyone in line.

An interesting note: Apparently a rep got fired for telling a customer how many iPhones that store had. Crazy.

Couldn't have been better.

Arrived at 8:45 PM, walked out by 10:45 PM with my shiny new 8GB Black iPhone. Service was friendly, and the store had stock of everything. They were turning people over at approximately 1 a minute when I got there.

No camping and no long waits.

Where: O2 Oxford Street London
How long: 2 hours in line, 25 minuets inside
People in front: 1
Customer Service: Offered a bottle of water and a blueberry muffin.
Bought: 16GB iPhone black.

extremely miserable experience...

where: Costa Mesa, CA
total time at mall/apple store: ~8 hours

got there an hour before opening. about 120 people from the front of the line. got into the store at 10 am, 2 hours after its opening at 8 am. by then there were over 500 people in line. my dad and brother got there phones within 20 minutes and when it was my turn the apple employee said there was a complication with my at&t account (which i shared with my brother on a familyplan)

in a nutshell...we had 5 apple employees helping us over the course of 5 hours, made 6 phone calls to the at&t customer service/advanced tech support

they told me i could not leave with an iphone and that i would have to wait for the at&t stores to get new shipments. i said that is ridiculous...

by 2:40, our 8th attempt on our 4th iphone (different imei #'s) was a success and i was ready to kill myself

thank god i got the damn thing...now i am waiting endlessly for it to finish "backing up" ......gay

My experience was not to well.

I went to the Apple Store at South Coast Plaza around 7:00 PM figuring the lines would have died down. They did. The line was 6 hours long when they opened. Only 3 when I got there.

So I waited in line, got into store, an Apple guy took me to a computer. Asked me what I want. I told him 16 gig black iPhone. He brought it. Did all required stuff, very fast and efficient. Then its time to print the receipt, and the network went down. Both AT&T and Apple's networks for the phones activation.

I had already plugged in my new iPhone and activated it. It was working perfect. But I couldn't take the phone since the server was down and my transaction didn't finish. And my old iPhone doesn't work cause my new one already has been set up.

Good news is I got a special pass so tomorrow morning I get to go straight to front of line and get the phone. Its sitting in the back with my name on it. At least I have a phone waiting, literally with my name on it.

Wonderful.

I walked up to an Apple store having removed my FAN discount that morning. As an employee walked around the line to ask us questions, I asked how that would affect my ability to purchase a black 16 gig (since some on this forum said it worked, and some said it didn't). She didn't know so she got the Apple business consultant who met me at the end of the line (a 5 hour line) and walked me into the store to buy it and leave within 15 minutes! Couldn't be happier.

Sounds like we were there at the exact same time almost. I arrived at 6pm and left a little after 9pm. Activation went fine..unfortunately it sounds like it all went to crap for you. Sorry to hear that but i was righ there in the trenches with ya ;)

not happy

Waited for 5 hours behind hundreds of people at Apple in Rancho Cucamonga. Came home with only a note getting me to the front of the line tomorrow morning. They said the AT&T servers shut off at midnight or something. Not exactly the best experience and Apple better figure out a way for this not to happen in the future or end the line a lot sooner. Big let down, the line was kinda fun met some cool peeps. Sucks coming home with nothing after 5 hours.:apple: was in line from 7:30pm - 12:30am

oh and kudos to the Apple employees.....nice as can be with coffee and drinks in line. They would not give out any info on their inventory but I suspect they had a few thousand on hand.

everyone in general in the line was really cool and not many were "pissed off" but those of you that are; LIGHTEN UP A LITTLE! things go wrong, people make mistakes.........dont sweat the small things in life.

Set up my camping chair in Basel in front of the Swisscom store at Greifengasse at 4 o'clock - first in line.

5 o'clock: 5 people behind me (mostly Dutch and German, had driven hundreds of miles to Switzerland to get one because they are 100 Euro cheaper than in the EU - gas was probably more expensive than the price difference)

6:30: 60 people behind me
6:45: I had a white 16gb. Went home, plugged it in, it was dead (bad battery). Literally RAN back to the store - to no avail. By the time I got there, all 16gb were sold out. Had to accept an 8gb as they didn't know whether they'd get another shipment before September.
7:30: everything sold out

Customer service was friendly, but no coffee, tea, or anything for those waiting. Swisscom didn't do in-store activations - so I went home after work and activated mine at about 11 a.m. - without a glitch.

Hey, you were in front of me at the Coleraine store.

Glad to hear you had no problems with purchasing and activating the 16GB iPhone. I've still had no luck getting a 16GB version, hoping to get one soon though!
