If I'm planning to use this device outside, is the screen very glossy and hard to read? How does it fare in the outdoors?

I use mine to perform outside occasionally. I used to use my Dell XPS 13 9343 and the rMBP is easier to see outside (sunny conditions). I could barely read sheet music on the XPS, and I usually can on the rMBP.

Thanks for the quick reply. I want to be able to work outside, sometimes I like working on my business in the park, at a picnic table so I hope the macbook will be able to handle that without being too glossy.

The anti reflective coating is pretty good but it is no Matt screen I'd make sure you were in some sort of shade on a sunny day.

You'll also want to carry a nice cleaning cloth because dust and smudges on the screen become very annoying.

My 15" skis, has gotten into synchronized swimming, sun baths, and likes long walks in the park with the neighbors 13". Just make sure it knows your address and is "findmymac" equipped, before you send Jr. on his way to take on the world. If it rains, buy him the appropriate protection. My Mac's best friend is a Window, or should I say WAS a Window. RIP little H. P. Dell the third.
