Yeah one can hope though. I'm more than satisfied on how crysis 2 plays on my 4850 imac 27. This is probably also because I rarely play games.

Well it does run though. Yes i would also love to have native res...but it works fine. I am currently trying to sell my Fall 2009 iMac, and i am really tempted to build a Gaming PC instead of buying the new iMac.
I'd integrate a AMD card with mini-display port so i could use a Apple Cinema Display instead of those other ugly or overly expensive 2560x1440/1600 displays.
I am gaming on my 2007 Macbook Pro that has the GeForce 8600M GT, 256MB. The new iMac will definitely be an improvement for me. =p
Games I play consist of Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, the Battlefield series and Guild Wars. I can run all of them, although with the lowest settings, on my current laptop. Only Battlefield BC2's frame rate is at times below what I can live with.

my imac runs flawlessly for games. sure its not going to run crysis 2 on full blast, but i dont expect it too
starcraft 2 on ultra settings and i still get 45 fps in big battles and im satisfied with it

If you want to game, get a loaded Dell Studio XPS with the latest i7, 8GB RAM, ATI HD5870 and a 24 inch IPS monitor for ~$1500.

If that's all you want, sure. I think most people here want the Mac experience with the ability to play games, too. It's not 100% about gaming, everything else be damned.

Seriously forget about Dell if you want to game on your PC.
Also forget about Macs for serious gaming 😉
Macs are awesome for everything else but games and serious fast harddrive/SSD systems.
Build yourself a great PC - Sandy bridge I7 2600K CPU, 16 or 32 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz RAM, Radeon 6970 2GB Ram or GTX 280 GPU card and a couple of blazing fast PCI Express SSD Revodrive SSD Flash disks and a Vertex 3 SSD for data and you have a system that will make even a HIGH Specced MacPro (don't think about MacBookPros here) fall to its knees 😎
I have benchmarked dozens of games on the 27" imac i7, including Crysis 2.

Some people just don't want to buy a PC and have to maintain two separate machines with two separate OSes (i.e: ME). I personally don't see why bother with all the hassle unless you're that "hardcore" about squeezing out the highest FPS on your games, which is a very small minority to begin with.
Specced out iMacs and Mac Pros are plenty fast for gaming IMO and just fine for everyone else.
Edit: BTW, I think you can be a "serious" gamer without needing to be obsessed with specs or hardware.

I must say that as much as I love OSx, I still find that I miss a lot of the programs I could get for Windows, that aren't made for Mac.
Same with Mac - I enjoy using Aperture, Coda, espresso and even iPhoto - programs only available for OSx.
I use a lot of small programs for PC, that I can't find for OSx - which is why I still enjoy having the best of both worlds at my fingertips 🙂
Because I plan to build my PC really really really fast - especially on the harddrive side and GPU side (PCI Epress SSD card 700 MB/sec true speed + 2 Vertex 3 SSD's + Radeon 6970 2 Gb RAM), I will enjoy using Photoshop, Indesign and Dreamweaver more on my PC than on my Mac.
I also like to be able to control fan noise and exchange fans that are worn out with low noise barely audible fans. I can do that in a PC selfbuilder, not in any Mac. The most you can do in macs is to find the same fan in a newer version.
On the other hand you have these little small great programs for Mac OSx and the nice smooth interface, that I love so much
I'm planning on doing a lot of gaming on my iMac after the refresh. How does the magic mouse work for gaming? I only used it for a few minutes today while playing with an iMac at Best Buy, after a little bit of playing I can't imagine that it would work too well.
Also, for those of you who switched from a PC... How long did it take to get used to the mac keyboard? It's so much smaller than a PC keyboard (Without the numpad and everything) that I can tell there will be a learning curve.

keyboard looks nice, but it's definitely not the best typing experience. If das keyboard made a wireless keyboard I'd probably replace my keyboard right away. I hate the magic mouse and love the magic trackpad for everything but gaming. If your going to game, I would invest in a good gaming mouse.I bought an apple keyboard to use with my pc and love it. I also like the magic mouse for everything but gaming for gaming you really need something else.
I'll give it a try for a couple of weeks but if I can't get used to it I'll look for an alternative.
I have an old Logitec G5 gaming mouse, it would look damn strange attached to a Mac but that'll have to do.
I sold a near brand-new XPS 9100 Core i7 960 with 12GB of RAM a ATI 5870, and a 24" 1080p display. It was a great gaming system, but I really am sick of staring at a PC at home after staring at a PC all day at work. Plus the iMac will be better for me for photo and movie organization and editing. I'll be installing Windows on it primarily for DC Universe Online.
