According to the front page article, the Xr will have "Haptic Touch". Would that work in a similar way to 3D Touch, for things such as live photos, or home screen icon shortcuts?

Not sure, but I'm curious about this too. Honestly the only 3D touch feature I would really miss is the keyboard cursor function, and I'm not sure if that's possible without 3D touch. Live photos already works via long press on the iPhone SE so I imagine it would be the same (with haptic feedback) on the Xr.

I would definitively miss 3D Touch. I use it to open pages in safari all the time, peek at different stuff and the keyboard cursor... I think it's a mistake not to include 3D Touch in the Xr.

I read somewhere that the keyboard cursor was being replaced in software by a long press on the space bar. If true, that would pretty much eliminate the need for 3D touch entirely for me... I can't think of any other instances in which i use it.

I’ve been playing with iOS 12 on my iPad Pro 12.9 and if you like the keyboard cursor then your going to love what is coming in 12.

You do what Apple is calling a “long Touch” on the space bar (that is hold it down for about a second or less) and the keyboard will gray out, and now acts as a touch pad that moves the cursor very accurately where you want it. If you place it on a word and continue holding the space bar down while tapping it with another finger you will select that word, and the Select, Select All, Paste, menu will pop up. It’s really cool.

It doesn't support 3D touch functions as far as hands on videos have shown

The Verge and Engadget have videos showing this...it can do the camera and flashlight form the lock screen, via software, but it doesn't support 3D touch on the apps like weather or phone or mail to see widgets and make 3D touch selections

If they manage to keep the 3D touch cursor that will be great, I enjoy the 3D touch functionality...hopefully they are able to expand on it with software updates, because I have been a fan of the feature since the 6s

That is included in iOS 12 apparently.

Does answering whatsapp messages in the lock screen works with an iphone SE as well? If so, then it will work with the XR, I guess..

Holy cow, I am running the iOS 12 beta on my phone and just tried this, and it works beautifully! Even better, with 3D Touch enabled devices, you can press into the space bar to enable this function instantly.

The 3D Touch moving the cursor on the keyboard has been present on 3D Touch With iOS 11 as well.
