Why set it up all over again? That's the main reason I use iOS over Android - the ease of 99 percent complete image backups and restores. It doesn't get 100 percent - things like Kindle books and othe DRM content have to be reloaded. But everything else is backed up and restored. Nice and simple.

I usually restore from back up. Haven never done direct transfer. Which one is faster? I'm currently uploading 28K photos on google photos then going to delete a ton so I don't have that many to transfer over on the new phone.

dual factor authentication cannot undo thing will force me to start fresh, if I even decide to buy iPhone because 5g will not operate in dual sim mode 🥵🤬🤬🤬😡😡😡😡🔥🔥🔥🔥

Direct Transfer has worked flawlessly for me over the last year. No complaints. Faster than iCloud backup and more reliable.

Is it faster than using restore from backup though? Also, will direct transfer still work if you don't use icloud?

In my experience it’s faster than iCloud because the data is transferred locally and only the apps get downloaded (probably some iCloud data as well).
Not sure about the second part. I use iCloud so I’ve never tried it without.

I have a giant rule of thumb. Every new piece of hardware get a fresh install. With iCloud saving everything the only thing I lose is a little bit of time.

Just watched a few videos on it. It appears icloud is not required as it's transferring via bluetooth.

Does the direct transfer port your number/active the phone to your carrier or do you have to do that after?

Set up as new, sign into iCloud, download my most frequently used apps, which I sign into instantly with iOS password manager.
It’s really insanely easy. Not much work at all to set up as new.

Does Apple Watch Activity data/achievements sync via iCloud now? That would be the only thing that stopped me - it used to only retain those if restored from a backup but seem to remember reading that that data is now stored in the cloud.

That‘s my question too. I‘d really like to set up as new, but all my Activity Data, Achievements and all Health data has to be synced via iCloud. Will all these data be synced?

You’ll need to activate the phone or switch SIM cards, according to carrier instructions. Direct Transfer only covers device content and settings.

Anyone know the answer to this? I'd like to set up as new, but do not want to lose Activity or Health data.

I just looked at my settings and my Activity/Health data appears to be backed up to iCloud. I'm going to attempt a setup as new next month when I get my 12 Pro Max and see if it transfers over. If it doesn't, I still have my XS Max, and I'll do a restore from backup. I *think* though, that it should transfer to the new phone from iCloud so I still have my medals/Watch workout info, etc.

I'd prefer to setup as new though this time, because I've been restoring from backup far too many years (I think since iPhone 7 Plus) or from whenever I got my Apple Watch Series 0 (now using S4).

I've decided to just clean up my current iPhone and get rid of a lot of apps. I'll restore from iCloud once my new phone comes : ).

Insert your ‘active’ sim ( from the old device ) to the new one, and then power it on. keep both devices close, end it’ll transfer (and activate) most of the data including your e-sim (if that’s active) number.
