Tempted to do a fresh install, as previously stated, there's nothing like a fresh OS, feels all new. Only thing thats stopping me is i dunno if a fresh install would effect the version of iLife i have installed, recently bought and installed iLife 08, however i've since lost the disc and don't wanna have to buy it again, ANyone know if it would affect iLife or not?

And just to confirm, i know how it might sound, but i did NOT obtain an illegal copy of iLife, truth be told i installed it on my then girlfriends MacBook and forgot to take the disc home, and since broke up, don't really wanna ask her for it back

Yes, a fresh install erases all your applications. If you don't have all your original install discs, fresh install is not for you.

I remember upgrading from Panther to Tiger and it seemed really slow. I did a fresh install and it was so much faster. I always do a fresh install, not like I use my Mac for work! Just for Fun and a bit of design!

I'm going to backup onto an external, then fresh install. I will then install freeware from the web, and move the others and my documents to the new install. Should take about 3 hours or so to set all my preferences...

I don't want to go through the hassle of backing up and restoring all my files/apps. I'll just do an Archive & Install. Besides, my Tiger installation is only a few months old so it isn't due for a reinstall yet anyway.

Fresh:cool:

My Tiger install has been running since I got my Mac Pro a year ago, it's time for a reinstall. Time to go back run SuperDuper!
:p:p

Not excited to install all of my apps again

but what about Archive and Install in this case??? I'm seriously due for a fresh install (still running 10.3.9 from the day I bought it on March 4, 2005) but am worried about a couple applications...I need Microsoft Word but lost the install disc...if I archive and install will I still get some benefit of a new, clean, smooth OS???

I personally wouldn't recommend an archive and install with Leopard due to the varying and quite different frameworks and leftover legacy Kext files that method often winds up with.

It's good practice to do a clean install for this upgrade.

just an opinion

ymmv :)

I would do a fresh install, but I don't have anywhere to back up my files, and some of my apps are irreplaceable.

Definitely...

..a clean install. I plan on doing a bootcamp install for a few new games coming down the pike (Unreal 3, COD4) when I move to 10.5... Since I have 2 partitions now, I'll need to blow the drive away and make 1 partition so bootcamp will be happy to split it. I wish there was some way around this as I really prefer to organize my data separately from my System/Apps but whatdoyado...

Ideally I'd like to do a fresh install but seeing as it's in the middle of the semester and all I don't really have time. I will do an "upgrade" on my MacBook Pro (since it's my secondary machine) and I will probably leave Tiger on my Mac until I finish the semester...my data is too valuable - I can't afford to accidently lose any of it somehow while upgrading - well, on second thought, if it goes REALLY well on my mbp I'll do the upgrade on my iMac then do a fresh install on both when I finish the semester :) Either way, I'm very excited for this OS. Pretty cheap price, too, considering all that we get.

That is an excellent reason to go out and by an external drive to backup to. You're playing with fire, you won't realize how devastating a hard drive crash can be until it happens to you. You'll also be able to take advantage of Time Machine too.

When I get Leopard I will either do one of two things:
1. Make a back up to my external drive and do a fresh install. Running a fresh new install always feels so good. Almost like your computer is brand new again!
or
2. I will just do an archive and install so I can save some time. Even with USB 2.0 USB drives are very slow. I really need a FireWire drive. Oh, well maybe for my birthday.
I can't wait to get Leopard! So close to Oct. 26!:D:apple:

I think I'll do an archive and install otherwise I have to reinstall Windows again :( too much work

I'm probably going to do an Archive and Install. I might do a fresh install after a backup, but only if I buy a new external HD the same day. I might be spending money on iLife and maybe an iPhone...more than what my wallet is used to.:(

I think I am going to simply do an upgrade on my iMac. But my poor little powerbook has been really slow lately and needs a little help so I will wipe it clean and do a fresh install.

Does anyone know if I can do a custom install and leave out all the printer drivers and languages that I do not need?

hey got a few questions,
I have only been a mac user since june and its been great, and I want to get leopard, however I have a few questions (didnt see the answers but ill look again). If I just do an upgrade, how safe are my files? Is it very likely that I will loose any of my music or files? I dont have an external drive with me, but the one I do have is NTFS formated. Will this work with leopard, or do I need a FAT32 formated external drive? Thanks for the help
