The iPhone 16 features the A18 chip, and iOS 18 was just released. Presumably, next year we'll see the iPhone 17 with the A19 chip and iOS 19. While it's not a major issue, isn't the naming a bit confusing? Additionally, we have iPads and Macs, which don't follow a model number naming convention. Instead, they're referred to as the MacBook Air (2024), MacBook Air with the M3 chip, or iPad Pro 11 with the M4 chip, etc. I wonder why Apple doesn't use a year-based naming system for the iPhone, like calling the iPhone 16 the iPhone 2025, since it will mostly be in use throughout 2025. Since Apple releases a new model annually, that would make sense. How would you approach iPhone model naming if you were in charge at Apple? Or would you keep it as it is?

I would switch to year-based naming for everything (including software, the M-series chips, etc).

Simply put just the iPhone then reference the year. Like MacBook etc.
Agreed. Next year's models should be iPhone 25, 25 Plus, 25 Pro, etc. Like cars. Makes it pretty obvious on the gen going forward. I don't see them ever releasing two within the same calendar year. Might even make sense in the future to skip a year, but I'm sure Apple and cell carriers don't want to miss that annual revenue tick.

I'm surprised Apple hasn't dropped the numeric in the name.

It would probably help getting less criticism, how it's the same every year...

Maybe not. LOL
