I’m thinking of upgrading my iPad 3 from iOS 6 to iOS 9.3 beta 1 and I was wondering how much of a performance hit I should expect.

Probably awful as ever. I haven't used my iPad 3 in months. The performance hit will probably be huge.

You should've updated to iOS 7 when it came out. iOS 9 feels terrible on iPad 3, the iPad doesn't have enough power to run iOS 9 like it should, it feels like an iPad 2 with a Retina Display. Just stay on iOS 6 till u upgrade to a newer iPad in the future, iOS 6 is still amazing, I wish I had an option to downgrade all my apple devices.

nononononononononoononononoONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONNONONONONONO. Never ever update it. Its pretty much useless now. I know it because I constantly use it. Altough 9.3 is way better than 8 and above its pretty bad considering ios 6.
iOS 9.3 does make a difference, a big difference for me. It pretty much eliminated most of the lag and stutter on my iPhone 5 and iPad 4 compared to iOS 9.2 and below. My iPhone 5 feels like an iPhone again, fast and smooth. My iPad is a little slower, but still way better than iOS 8 and the previous iOS 9's.
However, I do have an iPad 3 on 7.1.1 and it is faster than my iPad 4 on 9.3 for almost everything. I am curious how the iPad 3 is on 9.3 though.
I'd say, if you just use your iPad for simple stuff like Safari and Youtube, and the current apps make you happy, don't upgrade.

I have an iPad 4 too, it feels good with 9.3, the problem with iOS 9 is mainly animations and the Reduce transparency option on iPad 4 has fixed everything for me from spotlight stutter to the slow app switcher. I can finally compare iOS 9 to iOS 6 & 7.
