How's the Contacts app on Golden Gate?

I have only one concern: could someone send a screenshot of the Contacts app from Golden Gate beta? Please, please? I'm a heavy user of the Contacts app and Tahoe just messed everything up.

Absolutely worthless UI. What a waste. I don't remember if the backgrounds of contact sheets in Tahoe were animated, but the background colour now shifts around subtly, which is so unnecessary and off-putting.

I'm going to be optimistic based on this timeline which may explain the context of the changes thus far in Beta 1, i.e. undoing LG wasn't going to be done all at once, so priorities were made and those things got changed in the UI, the most pervasive and universally affective.

Menaing, there may be more rectification and UI fixes to come by September. I think they can do it, if that's what they are doing.

A horrible own goal by Apple. It's the damn Contacts app. Who cares if it looks boring. Just make it work. If they want to flex their design muscles, do it with the Music app or whatever

I don’t understand why there isn’t a toggle for a ‘classic’ (non-card) style and ‘modern’ card style.

Simple solution, suits everyone.

The Contacts app should be smarter by now. Why not sync Smart lists between all Apple's gadgets? And sync breaks TO the Mac app when using Apple's cloud syncing in beta 1 and 2 (adding new contact via iPhone doesn't usually sync over to Mac, but it does sync to iCloud and iPad)

I had to buy a copy of BusyContacts. Now I have to figure out how to save a contact to a specific contact list. It feels like everybody is forcing me to use only one contact list.

That classic, non-card option is basically the view I wanted as well. I’m the developer of Compact Contacts. It uses a dense native table with resizable columns and optional detail sections, while still working with the system Contacts database. Groups, Saved Views and long Notes are there too.

I bought it. It loaded my 6800+ contacts. There was a bit of "ball spinning" during indexing. A progress bar might be useful, but this is a one-time event after installation or adding a DB
It displayed on contact, then became unresponsive.

It keeps hanging.

Thank you for purchasing Compact Contacts and for sending the diagnostic. I’m sorry this confirms a real performance defect in version 1.2, not normal indexing behavior or a problem with your Mac. I’ve isolated it to repeated column-catalog work after a large address book loads, which can block the interface.

A progress indicator is a good suggestion, but the blocking work itself must be fixed first so the interface remains responsive. You don’t need to send any contact exports or vCards; this diagnostic contains enough information to investigate safely.

I’m working on the fix immediately and will release a hotfix as soon as it has been verified. I’ll contact you again when the update is available. Thank you for reporting this and for your patience.

I'm curious..

I've searched for a way to clean up my contacts for quite some time. For example, convert all phone numbers from +1 (212) 555-1212 to 212.555.1212 - so they can all have an identical format

Can your app help with this?

haralds, Compact Contacts 1.3 is now live. This release includes the large-library and Notes-indexing changes made in response to the issue you reported: indexing now shows progress, avoids a second Contacts enumeration, and large-table work is reused instead of repeated. The busy indicator remains.

I do not want to call your exact case fully resolved until it is confirmed with your real 6,800+ contact library and Notes search enabled. If you install 1.3, could you let me know whether indexing finishes, roughly how long it takes, and whether the interface remains responsive afterward?

On Mac, 1.3 also adds Merge Studio for duplicates, with field-by-field value choices, destination-account selection and encrypted on-device undo history. General contact deletion is still not exposed; groups can be deleted from the sidebar without deleting their contacts.
