I purchased an external monitor for work to be used with my work laptop (Lenovo X250). Connected via HDMI, works flawlessly out of the box.
Tried the same monitor with my 2017-18 MBP (via an adapter HDMI to USB C) and the picture is blurred and zoomed out (I.e. I cannot see a couple of centimetres of screen on all sides of the screen, top, left bottom and right). What’s going on? When I checked the display properties it correctly recognises the dual screen set up and the resolution of the HP (1080). With the Lenovo it looks miles better (not retina levels, but Ok to do some work).

So have you tried using a different adapter? My suggestion is to try a different adapter first and see if that fixes the problem, as some cheaper USB-C adapters don’t work very well.

If that still doesn’t work you might see if you monitor has a DisplayPort, and try using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable. I personally use DisplayPort on my 2017 MacBook Pro as that seems to have better consistency in working every time compared to HDMI.

The monitor has two ports: VGA and HDMI. It comes with 1 HDMI cable. So I purchased an HDMI to USB-C adaptor from Amazon which has good reviews (‘uni’ model).

With the Lenovo I use the same HDMI cable that the monitor comes with plus and HDMI to Mini DP adapter, and it works fine out of the box.

I will try with a VGA cable (no adapter) and see what happens.
