I have a big problem on my hands, and no matter how much time I spent speaking with a mac help person on the phone and or scouring the net for help I just cant figure out why my MacBook Pro is in this permanent blackout mode.

    Here is some background information:

I bought the MacBook Pro in Canada about 6 months ago, so the laptop is under full warranty. I am currently in Europe and will be heading to Malta in 2 days. So before I know the problem, I dont wish to spend over 200 dollars shipping the computer to a Mac Support place in Warsaw Poland as Im leaving for Malta in 2 days. This is a huge problem for me and there seems to be no way out.

    Details on what happened:

I updated from OS X 10.4 to Leopard about 2 weeks ago, everything was running fine, no problems whatsoever. I got on the overnight train to travel cross country to spend Xmas with the family and computer worked perfect on the train. As soon as I checked into the hotel, I turned on the computer to test the WIFI connection the hotel had, the system booted up fine from sleepmode and then after about 6-7 sec the monitor went completely black...

I was barely able to make out anything on the screen as at first I thought my battery died, but even when i plugged in my power supply the monitor did not come out of this state. Using the keys to turn brightness all the way up and or all the way down to a state where the monitor shut off did not work either. I was completely stumped at what happened.

I tried everything, I searched on every forum and every google entry that might have anything to do with the issue Im having. I feel so alone! I tried rebooting the system about 10 times, taking out the battery, rebooting from just power supply, i reset the ram with the Apple + Option + R + P option on restart, i played with monitor settings and other things and its all a no go.

Here are something I noticed while the comp is in this state:

Applications will seem like they are starting to run but will kick me back out within seconds of clicking the icon.

The computer does not recognize the AirPort Internet Wireless card is installed, almost like its not there at the moment.

The Screen is VERY dark, one needs a lot of light to see anything, and corners of the screen are almost impossible to see.

Here is the Log File I got, sorry that its so misaligned but for some reason the format isnt letting me get a properly aligned copy and paste:

Until I know its not a hardware problem I cannot give this poor thing over to the Mac Repair shop since its my only computer and all my work is on it. I do have a full backup made of my comp but I dont have another mac here in europe to restore on to. Any help in this issue is MUCH appreciated, thanks a ton. I feel bad that my first post here is a problem post, but I will try to lend a helping hand where ever i can in the future.

The dark screen you are talking about happened to me with my old Powerbook G4 about 6 months ago.

I lent it to someone and had it returned to me with a busted case as if it was dropped on its corner. It was broken. Definite hardware issue. I forget what my school's computer support said it was, but they said it was a huge repair.

The only thing I can recommend for you to try is uninstalling the iStat widget if you have it installed. I know there have been issues with the macbook line waking up from sleep when that is installed.

I don't think that will fix it. It sounds like a hardware issue.

Have you tried booting off of your Leopard install disc? Try doing that and running the few utility apps it has and put it to sleep and wake it up to see if you have any problems, if you don't its software, if you do, it is most likely hardware.

I hate to say this but it sounds like maybe the display driver is pooched (maybe the inverter). The backlight for the display is not working correctly and the display itself may be power starved. My backlight would flicker every once and a while and I had a high pitched whine. Apple replaced the inverter for the display, but somehow managed to break my iSight camera in the process, and the display is fine now. You may have no choice but to ship it to a repair center.
