hello everybody, i'm now stucked in a very pissed off situation with iphone.
recently i bought a iphone 4,so i went to restore whatever is inside my 3Gs into iphone 4.
but then now comes the problem, the iphone 4 is 16gb, then after first sync, the storage over shot. no apps no music is in the phone, only contact, messages, calendar etc. the yellow bars shows 12GB of my storage is occupied by others!!!
i restored several times but it was to no avail, so i went online and check, discovered some ppl faced similar problems also but the others didn;t occupy as big as 12GB .
so now i have no choice,dk what to do.
i need to transfer, but then there;s no way to transfer, can somebody help to tell me what to do?
is it phone or itunes problem?
oh, btw, my c drive increased by 40GB after the several sync with the new phone, now i am really pissed off

:(so please provide me with some solutions
tks

what happens if you do a fresh restore? (don't restore from backup). perhaps the backup file is damaged.

if you have your 3GS lying around still, do the backup again. and delete all the other backups in iTunes.

to delete the other backups: iTunes preferences > Devices tab. remove what you don't need.

once you've done that, try to restore from backup again?

hmm...i need
in fact ,several times
i even updated my itunes to the latest version
but none of it works
so now my iphone 4 is just lying useless...

vachargefan:my 3gs is 32GB
chrisperro:i restored many times but the 12GB yellow bar is always there:(

restore as new and don't sync the music or the solution in the website link don't have to be jailbroken.
Or try erase all content in the iphone settings.

Were you using less than 13GB on your 32GB 3GS (I believe with OS and other overhead, you only get about 13GB free space to use on a 16GB iPhone)?

iApples:i did. it worked but i need my messages in the new phone....
chrisperro:i tried but then like that i would not have my messages left...
trozau:my 3gs is 32GB while 4 is 16GB
but then when i restore the backup file finish, there was no apps no music, only an empty phone with contacts, messages, and 12GB others...

The others is probably apps that you have downloaded from the app store. best thing to do, is to plug in the 32GB phone and look at how everything is on that. Note the music size, other size etc. You might need to uncheck the synch apps and stuff and then make a new backup. If you have more then 16GB worth of stuff on your old phone, it is probably going to screw up transfering it to a smaller phone. That is most likely where the issues with the phone are coming from

The backup is obviously not worth using, Restore As New, and set up as a new phone.....FORGET THE BACKUP!

noted
i'll go and try it later
tks for the solution
i'll come back and post how it goes
whether it works anot

That was what I was thinking. OP, make sure that the total combined usage of pics, music, vide, apps and others on your 32GB 3GS does not go over what you have available to use on your 16GB iP4.

ok
but i might have to do it tomorrow
it might take a long time
now is bed time
tks a bunch

Try unchecking "Sync voice memos". When I did this I got back 6 Gig and only had three or short voice memos.

If you need your messages.. I would recommend that you use a tool called ibackupbot
heres a link
http://www.icopybot.com/itunes-backup-manager.htm

This allows you to extract parts of your filesystem thats in your backup..
Your messages are stored in library/var/mobile/sms/sms.db something like that.. you can google and find the exact location..

Make sure you have the sms.db checked.. in the upper left. theirs a button that says extracts to folder... Then make sure u click provide info for partial extraction or something like that..

(Make sure your phone is on a fresh restore now).. and do a backup..

Change to that backup in iBackupbot.. click the button that says import files.. Import your sms.db file that you previously extracted...

And click file restore.. and its going to put your messages back onto your device

crucial problem still not solved,SOS!!!!!

This is third thread that you have started on this....Do you actually want to fix your phone, or are you just waiting for an answer that you agree with?

If you have gmail, all of your previous messages will auto download once you set io the email accounts - after you restore as new phone.

What kind of email are you using?
