Hulu yesterday began rolling out an updated interface design on the Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, and other compatible set-top boxes. The revamped look includes a vertical navigation sidebar on the left side of the display, making it easier to get to TV shows, movies, sports, saved content, settings, and more.

Hulu confirmed to TechCrunch that it has started providing the sidebar design to some users, and it will continue going out over the next few weeks. Apple TV users should start seeing it as of this week, though it will take some time for it to show up for everyone.

Pressing on the back button while using the Hulu app will open up the sidebar, offering up quicker access to navigation options. With the current non-updated interface, Hulu users need to scroll all the way to the top of the app to get to the top navigation bar.

Hulu is priced starting at $7.99 per month for the plan that is supplemented with ads, while the ad-free plan is priced at $12.99 per month. Hulu also offers Live TV options that are priced starting at $69.99 per month.

I think the vertical navigation bar makes sense (there's more horizontal screen real estate on a TV than vertical). However I wish there was more consistency in accessing the navigation bar across applications. I'd like to be able to bring up an app's menu with a single button click or gesture, instead of having to swipe around and hope that I eventually get to the menu.

As far as I know there is no standard for this, but maybe I just missed it. I admittedly haven't looked that hard.

I still can’t believe Hulu sells plans that you have to pay for that include ads. It’s so silly and goes against the purpose of streaming video. At a certain point soon ad-free plans will be unaffordable and I’ll have to visit the high seas.

You mean like Netflix, Peacock, Paramount and others? I know, what are they thinking?

This looks so much better than it did before. Nice job to all the devs on this massive update! Haha. In all seriousness, slow news day?

Did they fix video locking but audio continuing on recorded shows? Wouldn’t happen when I AirPlayed it from phone to Apple TV though. That was a game breaker and made me go back to Roku app, but then that one wouldn’t let me skip commercials on recorded shows that were still being recorded. I’d have to switch apps based on my needs, daily.

Now if they would bring back the new search order in Hulu Live that disappeared a few weeks ago I’d be happy. Channels were logically grouped in the new layout, now they are back to alphabetical. Alphabetical channel lists are useless.

No update here. Is the update not available everywhere in the US yet? Update was available on my Roku Tv.

I hope the AppleTV App gets more improvements with the next tvos17 than the last years. Ok in the code of beta 16.5 are codes about multiview. But I think the app needs a refresh design and also a LiveTV tab and, that is what I don’t understand (why it only exists in the US and not for the rest) a sport tab. We have DAZN, MLB.TV, NFL gamepass etc. But here in Germany…..nothing. Why?

I mean, so does pretty much every other streaming service now. Netflix, Peacock, HBO Max, Disney+. Only one that doesn't yet is AppleTV+.

Agreed completely. Really need some sort of live interface for the TV app that integrates with live streaming services (both free and paid).

I would like a stand alone sports app with updated scores instead of having to use the Apple Tv app because if you are watching a purchased movie or Tv show you can't check scores without stopping

For this I use Siri.

And for me it work. Ok Siri with chatgpt Integration would be may be better but who knows what the WWDC will bring us. The only wish I have a new complete tvOS 17 with a complete new AppleTV App.

Don’t know specifically about Hulu, but when will streaming apps finally start supporting Apple TV user profiles?? How hard can it be?

You mean like all newspapers, magazines, cable TV, and movies?
