This is exactly what will happen. It cracks me up how many people think they can finally put one over on the cable company when that exact same cable company provides the broadband through which their cable TV replacement will work. Of course those companies will increase the cost of broadband if this starts eating into their revenue numbers. They'll start talking up themes like "for high bandwidth users" etc and/or implement bandwidth tiers (much tighter than now). Sound familiar?

See that future. It's coming.

You assume everyone gets their broadband from their cable companies?

You know, I've just been using Airplay on my Mountain Lion-equipped MacBook to display Hulu on my TV. Why would I pay for Hulu Plus?

You've got a $1,500 workaround.

Many people, like me, just have a $99 Apple TV connected to their TV. The $9/month fee for Hulu Plus is a much better solution than paying $1,500 for a MacBook.

Has anyone watched anything with it? I'm very interested in how well it works. I use to have Hulu+ but could never get any of the clients (Xbox, Roku, Blu-ray) to work worth a damn... they would always crash, freeze, buffer, get out of sync...

...

Reviews please!

Seems pretty decent to me. Started an episode of Colbert Report and it stayed in sync, no buffering issues. Episode started off with 2 short ads (was all over after about 30-45 seconds I think). Fast forwarding stayed in sync after I started playback again. The progress bar for your position in the episode shows where the Ads are going to play. On this episode there were 4 breaks total (1 at the beginning, 2 in the later half, then 1 more right before the end).

So in reality it has no exclusive content?

Just faster access to the current season episodes, sprinkled with ads?

Hulu Plus has DIFFERENT content than Netflix has.

For example, I can't watch Comedy Central shows like 'The Daily Show' or 'The Colbert Report' unless I have cable TV or Hulu Plus. Netflix has never had it.

If you don't have cable TV at all, Hulu Plus complements Netflix.

You know, I've just been using Airplay on my Mountain Lion-equipped MacBook to display Hulu on my TV. Why would I pay for Hulu Plus?

Two reasons that I see:

1) More back episodes instead of just the last few ep.
2) HD video

I tried Hulu Plus but didn't see it as worth the money because of all the commericals. I do watch the standard Hulu on my mini that is attached to my HDTV. The free Hulu gives you five shows at a time but not the entire season unless you are into old shows that have been discontinued. The main reason for my mini was because my Apple TV didn't have enough Apps and I'm not the type of person to jailbreak things.

I don't have cable but have fast internet for about $50 monthly. I'm not into sports so I'm happy with HGTV and SciFi Channel shows I've been able to get on-line. It would be nice if all the Apps for the iPad/iPhone could be on the App Store for Macs and on ATV. That would be the best.

May not want to cut the cord just yet...

I have only been playing around with it for a few minutes, but when I look at Hulu Plus on the Apple TV for ABC Family, I see 3 shows (Kyle XY, Lincoln Heights and Switched at Birth). When I look at my Hulu Plus account on the web, I get a lot more content.

See screenshots.

This is where content providers need to make deals directly with Apple, Roku or whoever and let people buy a la carte. I would think it would put more money in HBO's pocket by cutting out middle man.

I agree with you that this needs to (will eventually) happen, but right now the content providers (some who own a stake in some cable companies) still have deals with the cable/satellite providers, so they can't (yet) come straight to us.

It will happen, just going to take time.

Great! Now add Pandora and Plex, and maybe I'll consider digging my ATV2 out of the 'old computer crap' bin. Until then, I'll stay with the Roku XS.

yep, I too see this as the obvious way of the future. it'll end up being pay for cable internet and get "free" tv subscription too, or some will just pay for internet and use the Apple tv and think they are beating the system.

companies don't like to lose money, they will figure out a way to compensate for lost customers who are still using another portion of the company's services.

...not necessarily the obvious future. I just signed up for Google Fiber here in Kansas City, will cost less than what I am paying now for a lower tier internet service from Time Warner. Gigabit upload and download with no data caps.

Do I trust Google? No
Do I distrust Time Warner more? Yes

You're looking at Hulu on the web, not Hulu Plus. Check off the Hulu Plus checkbox and watch all the content disappear.

That would be about the only way I would get cable. I refuse to pay for 100 channels of crap when I would only want to watch 2-3 channels tops. Let's hope they don't decide to charge the same for a few channels as much as it would cost just for the regular subscription. The cost of "renting" a movie via ATV is the main reason I only use redbox or Blockbuster (if i can find one).

This is super sweet! It's about time... Only few more needed subscription (like monthly) ONLY: Starz app ($4.99, please), HBO ($7.99, please) and Showtime ($4.99, please).

Ahhh..

Thanks David, didn't catch that one! I guess I never really used just the "plus" feature on the web since I would see everything anyway..

One would think that the paid version would have everything the free one would have. But that would make way too much sense. This is a media company we're talking about! :D
