Nothing to add, it looks terrible. Agree that probably it carries a lot of good tech, that maybe could impulse others to experiment with it and maybe do something more useful. The only good use case is the automatic translation of languages, which I think it's useful but does not need to have another dedicated device. I think it's another example of trying to make a product to solve a problem that does not exist!

Having a laser projector pinned to your chest makes me think they better have very good/quick hand recognition, or they will end up with lawsuits from people complaining about being blinded by some person using this.

I see most people saying "Hard No" "Hard Pass" etc. At least this is an attempt to do something a bit different, a bit exciting. I give them that. Shouldn't new tech seem like Sci-fi instead of boring incremental updates? This sure seems like sci-fi to me. I think the Apple Vision Pro is as big an unknown as this in terms of what the next generation of personal tech is gonna be. There is still no evidence that VR headsets are going to be the future.

It’s not a VR headset 😂
I read the original comment as saying that the Vision Pro as a VR device is an unproven category, as is this device’s product category. The comment never said this was a VR headset, it merely stated that neither were proven to have any future.

This is the last thing I want to see on my body. When I am not using an actual phone or computer all notifications can **** right off :p

I love how the article describes the hardware in great detail before adequately explaining at all what this thing does. I was going, “okay, what’s this for?” Then it was explained, and yeah, sounds like a royal waste of money.

Is this somehow meant to replace smartphones? Seems like a big step backwards.

I almost thought it was going to act as some kind of new-age pager when they showed that laser projection feature. Didn’t see this thing coming, and probably won’t hear much about it beyond this article.

I guess we’re all wondering if something will hypothetically replace the modern smartphone someday, but I highly doubt this is it, or in the right ballpark.
lol “new-age pager” iPager

Another example of:

Dr. Ian Malcolm : Yeah, yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, that they didn't stop to think if they should.

Bit like folding phones currently

I agree. It was the actual announcement itself that struck me as especially amateurish.

This screen capture really captures much of the problem with it. Even the founders seemed bored by it.

As for the product, there are some interesting things about it that might be useful to some people.

But the name is terrible. Was ‘ai pin’ really the best they could come up with.

Feels like the announcement being terrible and the name being awful as though they have a really bad marketing team.

As an aside, the whole bit about where the next eclipse will be… it got it completely wrong. The main functionality of this thing relying on LLMs that regularly get stuff incorrect is a dubious proposition.

Even sPaIN would have been better !

I would not pan it completely, since there is some interesting outside-the-box thinking and innovative technology going on here.
Even though I can‘t imagine this device being successful.

Actually, I think each existing Apple Watch would instantly provide the same and even more capabilities, if it was only equipped with a much, much smarter implementation of Siri.
While at the same time being much more convenient and user friendly.

Why all the negativity? Sure, the pricing may not be what you like, but no one is forcing you to buy it. Mac customers are paying $700 for 8GB of RAM or even more money for other Apple products that definitely aren't worth the sticker price e.g. $1000 stands, so the AI pin isn't any worse. Anyway, it's better than not having any new products/inventions on the horizon right? Dude took the leap, resigned from Apple and is trying to win in the game of life. Kudos.

If that laser thingy can shoot incoming bullets out of the air I’d buy one.

On a serious note how long will it be until police body cams use something like this and be able to scan people’s faces in public, instantly letting them know if someone has a warrant or is acting suspicious?

Yeah an Apple Watch that’s a bit smarter and maybe standalone would seem like it makes the pin redundant instantly.

I just don’t think the pin could completely replace the smartphone. And I don’t see any word on compatibility with smartphones whereas the Watch is a great companion piece.

Price is the least of their worries, as you’re pointing out nothing is actually that outlandish anymore these days.

I’m wondering if anyone outside of maybe the tech community understands it and if they’re doing a good enough job of explaining it.

this looks so bad and I feel so sorry for anyone who invested in this company and anyone who placed a preorder. lol

that projector on hand feature is a classic example of gimmick ideas.

what happens if they get on a crowded train and someone just snatches it

why would I want someone to listen to my phone calls

if I'm underground and there's no internet, how will this product be useful to me in getting directions or doing practically anything else other than taking video or listening to music.

I don't think they thought this product through.
The projector could have been a screen on, say, a wrist worn device?

Someone snatching your smartphone is already pretty easy though. It supports Bluetooth headphones. Might have offline capabilities, no word so far?

I wonder what dullard looked at this thing that has no local AI, and is not a pin and chose to call it "AI Pin" when so many other, more interesting, names are out there.
